Overview: Exercises functional authority and responsibility for the complete lifecycle of engineering projects within the designated area of responsibility, encompassing planning, organization, control, integration, and completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Control System Design & Implementation:
- Design, develop, and implement control systems.
- Develop and maintain PLC and HMI programs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
- Develop and maintain control system documentation (schematics, wiring diagrams, program comments).
- Perform system testing and validation.
- Stay current with the latest technologies and advancements in controls engineering.
Project Management & Coordination:
- Lead the due diligence, design, development, and implementation of new automation projects.
- Develops and maintains project schedules and budgets.
- Provides status reports to project teams and management.
- Coordinates project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages.
- Evaluates and approves design changes.
- Prepares interim and completion project reports.
- Develops a multi-year capital expense plan and cost justification plan.
- Performs due diligence and coordinates with external suppliers and internal stakeholders.
Equipment Management & Maintenance:
- Responsible for equipment rebuilds (scope definition, team coordination, final documentation).
- Develops and monitors equipment functions.
- Designs new installations and organizes installations upon design approval.
- Researches and proposes new technologies to enhance equipment and improve efficiency.
- Reviews and establishes key components as inventory items.
- Tracks and establishes rebuild cycles for equipment.
- Controls expenditures within project budget limitations.
- Manages spare parts inventory for all plant controls.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
- Supports plant operations by troubleshooting equipment, identifying root causes, and implementing permanent solutions.
- Provides technical guidance on production equipment issues.
General:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, production).
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment, adhering to all safety regulations.
- Any other duties as assigned by manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelors degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
- 5 years related experience.
- Ability to perform Controls Machine Rebuilds and Electrical Maintenance is preferred.
- Experience with PLC Systems: Allen-Bradley SLC 500 (5/04 and 5/05) and MicroLogix (1100, 1200, and 1400) programmed with RSLogix 500; CompactLogix 5370 (L32, L43, L35) and ControlLogix programmed with RSLogix 5000 (Studio 5000) v20.05; CompactLogix 5380 programmed with Studio 5000 v33.

Computer Skills:
- Successful candidates will possess expertise in design software, project management software, and Microsoft suite.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- City of Cleveland Electrical Class II license a plus.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Must be proficient with CAD
- SolidWorks experience a plus
- High degree of data management and organization skills

Physical Demands:
This position requires adherence to strict safety regulations and the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hats, eye protection, earplugs, and steel-toe footwear. The work environment may include exposure to varying temperatures, high noise levels, vibrations, confined spaces, narrow walkways, and working at heights up to 30 feet. Employees must be able to safely perform various physical tasks, including lifting up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
The Senior Controls Engineer interacts with historic machinery throughout the facility which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous equipment. Senior Controls Engineers will encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation throughout the facility which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne disturbances. There are areas of paved and unpaved walkway, active shipping lanes and occasionally standing water to be cautious of.
