Utility Traffic Control Flagger Job Description

As a Traffic Control employee of MidAmerica you are responsible for directing vehicles around utility crews. You will also be responsible for placing barricades, advance warning signs, and traffic cones to direct motorists away from utility workers, crews moving equipment, and oncoming traffic. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, and listen. Must have stamina required to comfortably stand up to 8-12 hours a day. Be able to be prepared and work in all weather conditions and tolerate varying climates of heat, cold, and rain. Must be comfortable working and thinking around high volumes of traffic at different speeds. Must be able to communicate with contractors and relate specific customer/job changes, and other information to foremen’s or MidAmerica management.

Position Requirements:

  • Wear and maintain proper PPE (work boots –with safety toe, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest).
  • Without Supervision must be able to set up and perform duties related to job site plan and or contractor directions.
  • Set-up advance warning signs, cones, etc. around work areas to divert traffic.  Ability to communicate with employees and customers, in person or by phone in a clear, straightforward, and professional manner.
  • Be able to stand throughout your entire shift, hand and arm movement is required.  This position does not allow for frequent breaks.
  • Follow MidAmerica safety standards in directing the vehicles as and when required. Flagging motorists to warn of obstacles or work ahead.
  • Maintaining the flow of traffic around the work zones.
  • Provide professionalism within instructing, guiding, or answering the general public about detours or work ahead.
  • Effectively communicating with other flaggers using hand-held devices.
  • Proactively informing the utility crews of any traffic issues that may affect their safety. Be able to warn utility workers when approaching vehicles have failed to adhere to the safety measures in place to prevent accidents and injuries to workers and other motorists.
  • Coordinated removal of all advance warning signs, barricades, and traffic cones upon completion of construction work
  • Complete daily paperwork accurately and timely

Additional Information

The ideal candidate would be comfortable with traveling from location to location within the client’s service territory. Candidates must be comfortable working full-time with a minimum of 40 - 45 hours per week. Near Vision and ability to see details at close range (within a few feet). Depth Perception, the ability to judge objects closer or farther away from you.
