The Middle East Journal (MEJ) is one of the oldest publications dedicated to the study of the modern Middle East. Published quarterly since 1947, MEJ publishes original and objective research and analysis, as well as source material, on the area from Morocco to Pakistan. MEJ provides the background necessary for an understanding and appreciation of the region's political and economic development, cultural heritage, ethnic and religious diversity.
About The Role
As part of a general reorganization of the Middle East Institute, MEJ will also be shifting its priorities to focus on the recent history, current circumstances, and future developments of the politics, economics, security, and societies of the contemporary Middle East. MEJ will include more articles related to U.S. policy toward the region. We seek an editor who will shepherd the journal through this transition and establish a standard of consistent excellence by publishing insightful and thought-provoking work of value to policymakers, experts, academics, and the educated lay-person.
This is a non-resident, contract position that reports directly to the Vice President for Policy. Payment will be quarterly upon publication of each issue.

What You'll Do
- Solicit, collect, edit, and select articles for publication, in consultation with the editorial board.
- Oversee advertising, subscriptions, and other forms of revenue.
- Oversee the publication of both the print and electronic versions of each issue.
- Oversee MEJ staff (although all MEJ staff will report to the MEI VP for Policy).
- Ensure that MEJ is published quarterly, on time and within budget.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field required, Ph.D. in a relevant field preferred.
- At least 5 years of professional experience related to the Middle East.
- Strong writing and editing skills, and preferably prior editorial experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Managerial and budgeting experience are both plusses.
Salary : $48,000 - $60,000
