Description of Duties:
Objectives of this Role: The Medical Records Technician is responsible for managing and organizing patient health information, ensuring its accuracy, and accessibility to the individuals served. This role involves working with various community vendors to ensure timely response to records requests in support of disability adjudication and continuity of care. This role will ensure compliance with all regulations and policies related to HIPAA and HITECH Act.
Key Responsibilities: Organize and maintain patient health records requests in both electronic and paper formats. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of patient information and medical records based on the appropriate requests. Collaborate with healthcare providers to obtain missing information and resolve discrepancies. Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and other privacy laws. Assist in the implementation and maintenance of electronic health record (EHR) systems. Provide support for audits and quality assurance initiatives. Train and educate staff on proper documentation practices and record-keeping procedures as it relates to external requests for health information. Ensure organizational compliance with Federal confidentiality rules 42 CFR, Part 2 as well as all federal, state and local policies on protecting health information. Maintain charge records for records retrieval, certification and copying costs according to O.C.G.A. §31-33-3.
Qualifications: High school diploma/GED and eligible for certification as a medical records technician by the American Health Information Management Association; or one (1) year of experience in a medical records unit, which involved the independent coding of diagnostic data.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology or a related field. Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or equivalent is preferred. Strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems, and healthcare regulations. Proficient in using electronic health record system and other healthcare software. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
