OR Circulator provides surgical patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. Functions as the Circulating Nurse to assist the OR in all surgical procedures. Able to function independently as the team leader during surgical procedures. Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously and, as needed, about patient condition.
Essential Job Duties:
- Assists OR Manager in the pre-operative planning of surgical procedures including but not limited to contact with company representatives, acquisition of specialized instrumentation, and planning for staffing needs.
- Responds to patient’s inappropriate behavior in a therapeutic manner.
- Takes appropriate actions and documents in response to manifested anxiety or distress. Requests Social Service/Pastoral Care, as appropriate.
- Assesses operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met.
- Monitors, positions and assists patient during procedure.
- Gives patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently.
- Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory.
- Adapts nursing procedures to meet the needs for treatment of individual neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate actions in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates ability to assess cardio respiratory systems for changes in pediatric to geriatric patients and is able to treat appropriately.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Provides quality patient care as outlines in the “Peri-operative Standards of Practice” in the surgical department’s policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
- Directs and assists in maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments.
- Communicates Lab/Imaging Services reports to the surgeon during the procedure.
- Gives thorough report of patient’s intraoperative condition to PACU nurse.
- Counts narcotics at beginning and end of all surgery/procedure days with another nurse, per hospital policy.
- Monitors temperature and humidity levels in the surgical services department daily.
- Assists OR Manager in the preoperative and postoperative contact with surgical patients.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Compensation: $34.00 - $57.69 per hour DOE $10,000 Sign-On Bonus for FT; $350/mo Housing Stipend avail for residents of Jackson, Gand or Summit county

- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field preferred
- Active RN license in the state of practice
- 2 years of experience preferred as a Circulating Nurse
- Proficiency in medical documentation and terminology
- Strong understanding of anatomy and physiology
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and patient care standards
