The Associate Director provides leadership in International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) by overseeing the planning, operational, and information systems aspects of the office. With the Executive Director, this role ensures institutional and student/scholar compliance with federal regulations and related SEVIS compliance work and supports the ISSS office’s advising and programming activities.
This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $72,480 - $90,594 per year.
Core Responsibilities:
- With the Executive Director, sets strategic and operational goals for the office. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with offices and stakeholders throughout the institution.
- In consultation with the Executive Director, directs and manages office work streams and systems to meet office and institutional goals.
- Oversees implementation and management of case management software and existing Excel-based reporting systems and supervises the work of the ISSS team on this project. (Note: ISSS currently uses SEVIS RTI—Real Time Interactive and hopes to move to a case management software system in the future.)
- Shared supervisory responsibility for ISSS team with some direct supervisory responsibility. Oversee new staff training and development, including scheduling and determining training needs. Evaluate the quality and quantity of work and provide oversight and feedback.
- Provides high-level leadership support for institutional SEVIS compliance relating to institutional renewals and updates for new program approvals. Assists with SEVIS system management, such as institutional recertification, I-17 Update, J-1 annual reports, and redesignation. Monitors SEVIS alerts and addresses issues directly or in conjunction with ISSS team members.
- Develops and maintains accurate and reliable reports for internal and external audiences.
- Provides vision to and support for programming and outreach efforts carried out by the office to foster and further community for international students by collaborating with colleagues across campus.
- Engages with established institutional support systems to support our international community and to address concerns and offer support actions with ISSS staff and other colleagues. Advises international students and scholars, as needed.
- 7 years of experience in higher education, with direct support of international students and scholars. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in international education, higher education student affairs, data management, or a relevant field strongly preferred.
- Experience as a SEVIS Designated School Official or Alternate Responsible Officer, 5 years preferred. [Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Legal Permanent Resident per federal regulations governing who can serve as a Designated School Official or Alternate Responsible Officer.]
- Knowledge of the policies, practices, laws and regulations of the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of State, U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), and the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Program that impact international students and scholars. Direct engagement with SEVIS Real-Time Interactive (RTI) and experience with case management software. Working knowledge of F-1 visa regulations and procedures expected. Expertise with J-1 visa regulations and procedures, particularly Short-Term Scholars and Professors, and knowledge of H-1B, TN and other visa categories is a plus.
- Proven record of successful project management and experience implementing and maintaining software systems, especially case management systems.
- Excellent communication, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. Effectively communicate in various modes with a diverse audience of constituents and colleagues and maintain confidential information with discretion. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical details in an effective way.
- Strong management, organizational, and leadership skills. Evidence of ability to work independently, and as a collaborative member in team efforts. Demonstrated evidence of taking initiative and responsibility, managing competing priorities, and achieving desired outcomes.
- Familiarity with budgeting, and experience managing/supervising employees and student workers desired.
- Interest in and commitment to professional development required. Active involvement with NAFSA and/or other appropriate professional associations is a plus.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to work at the computer for extended periods.
- Essential job functions require the ability to sit or stand for extended time.
- Requires fine dexterity, i.e., for writing and word processing/data entry.
- Occasional work on weekends/evenings, particularly at the start of academic sessions.
