What are the responsibilities and job description for the Prep Cook position at Middlebury College?
The Prep Cook supports the chef and cooks in prepping ingredients for meals and salad bar. This could include light cooking including frying, grilling, and other duties as necessary.
This is a full time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $18.19-$22.28 per hour.
Core Responsibilities:
- Prepare cooking ingredients by washing and chopping vegetables, cutting meat, and other meal prep.
- Undertake basic cooking duties, such as light frying and grilling.
- Prepare simple dishes, such as salads and entrees.
- Ensure that items are properly cut, labeled, dated & stored to maintain freshness and comply with regulations.
- Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen by sanitizing surfaces and taking out trash.
- Perform other duties as assigned to assist the department in obtaining and maintaining its mission.
- Adhering to all relevant sanitary regulations and standards.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required, training from a culinary school is an asset
- Must be able to pass ServSafe within a year of hiring
- 1 year of experience as a prep cook
- Knife skills: Proficiency in cutting, chopping, and slicing, which are fundamental to kitchen efficiency and food presentation.
- Attention to detail: Ability to follow recipes and preparation details accurately, ensuring consistency in food quality.
- Physical stamina: Capability to stand for long periods and handle the physical demands of a busy kitchen.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Must be able to lift 10-20 lbs numerous times each day and up to 50 lbs several times each day. Must be able to lift items above waist level. Must be able to push and pull up to 150 lbs frequently. Frequent bending and reaching activities. Must be able to perform numerous manual tasks and use a variety of kitchen equipment in a safe manner. Requires long periods of standing.
