Animal Shelter Manager

Middlesex County
Saluda, VA Full Time
POSTED ON 1/17/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/16/2025

Job Overview
The Animal Shelter Manager oversees the daily operations of the shelter, ensuring the well-being of all animals in our care, and promoting a safe and welcoming environment for both animals and visitors. This position requires strong leadership skills, a passion for animal welfare, and the ability to manage staff and volunteers effectively. The Manager will work closely with veterinary staff, volunteers, and community members to promote responsible pet ownership and facilitate adoptions.

Important Note: Working at our animal shelter is a rewarding but physically demanding job. Be prepared for hands-on tasks that can include cleaning up after animals (poop, pee, and occasional vomit), exposure to the elements (rain, mud, and varying weather conditions), and handling animals that may occasionally bite or scratch. While we are proud of our no kill status, there will be times when, due to the animal's physical condition, the shelter manager has to pull together the management team, to make a decision to let an animal go in peace, the hardest part of the job.

Responsiblities

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming facility for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Work with Animal control in siezure or custody cases, ensuring state law and judge decrees are followed, animals receive medical care as needed, and proper protocal is followed with their records.
  • Write and submit monthly and annual reports to the state board and work with them on inspections as required.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal animal welfare regulations.
  • Implement and monitor shelter protocols, including intake, quarantine, and adoption processes.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise shelter staff and volunteers.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to create a collaborative and motivated team environment.
  • Oversee the daily care, feeding, cleaning, and medical needs of all animals in the shelter.
  • Work with veterinarians to develop and execute health and vaccination protocols.
  • Monitor the physical and emotional well-being of animals, implementing enrichment programs as needed.
  • Evaluate animals for behavior and temperament, recommending appropriate interventions or placements.
  • Build relationships with local community members, organizations, and businesses to promote the shelter’s mission.
  • Serve as the shelter’s spokesperson, ensuring positive representation in the media and public forums.
  • Develop and manage the shelter’s budget, including tracking expenses and food
  • Maintain accurate records of animal intake, adoptions, and medical care

Experience

  • Previous experience in animal care and management within a shelter, animal control, or veterinary setting is required.
  • Knowlege of animal medical care needs in a confined environment
  • Skills in dog training, pet sitting, customer service, pet grooming, dog handling, animal restraint, or veterinary assistance are highly desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with staff, volunteers, visitors, and community members effectively.
  • A genuine passion for animal welfare and advocacy is essential for success in this role.
