Role Title : Substance Abuse Counselor
Location : On-site, Answer House (South Boston)
Work Schedule : Full Time, Tuesday-Saturday 10 : 30 am - 6 : 30 pm

The Role :
As a Substance Abuse Counselor with MHSA, you'll be integral in advancing our mission to deliver high-quality person-centered services. You'll be responsible for providing evidence-based substance abuse counseling and 12-step models to all clients, processing all incoming client referrals, and orienting clients to the program. This role will involve conducting individual and group counseling sessions, and maintaining relationships with referring agencies to support adult males in a halfway house recovery setting.
Key Responsibilities :
- Conduct diagnostic assessment interviews and individual counseling sessions.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of program policies and philosophy of treatment.
- Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions.
- Participate in group supervision, staff meetings, case conferences, and training sessions.
- Write clinical assessments, group notes, treatment summaries, and court correspondence.
- Conduct educational / motivational classes as assigned.
- Engage in discharge planning, aftercare referral, and follow-up with clients.
- Provide crisis intervention counseling when needed.
- Provide HIV / AIDS / STD education, information, and referral services.
- Serve as Tobacco Education Coordinator when assigned.
- Maintain comprehensive client records.
- Monitor client compliance with program rules and provide supervision of client activities.
- Facilitate or supervise urine drug screening and medication administration according to policies and BSAS protocols.
- Maintain client confidentiality in compliance with applicable laws.
- Engage in training to expand knowledge of substance abuse and related disciplines to improve clinical skills.
- Provide staff coverage for non-clinical functions when needed.
- Abide by MHSA policies regarding boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
- Fulfill various other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director to ensure program success.
