Job Summary:
The Engineering Technician provides support to the engineering department staff for varied engineering and construction related tasks primarily focused on construction coordination and inspection. The project types are water utility distribution system and production facility related improvements. Reports to the senior department engineers.
Work Performed:
Construction Related Duties
- Support and perform field inspection as assigned of all new water plant and distribution system construction.
- While inspecting, make sure that contractors perform work to Tidewaters standards and specifications.
- Responsible for reviewing design drawings for service material, ordering, preparing and receiving related purchase orders for materials and installation of same for new distribution system projects.
- Where assigned hold necessary pre-construction and project job meetings. Provide meeting minutes and necessary follow documents and distribution to project participants
- Where assigned, coordinate, inspect and document pressure testing of all new construction.
- As necessary conduct testing of new construction subsurface locating systems for proper installation and operation.
- Where assigned prepare construction as-builts and collect GPS data for all system components.
- Coordinate the operation of systems under construction for coordination with testing activities.
- Be available to attend to specific construction activities when extended on-site observations and coordination are required.
- Review construction projects to determine the status of punch list completion.
General Engineering Related Duties
- Provide technical and field support to Engineering, and other Company departments.
- Prepare periodic daily and/or project status reports to project managers and/or Director of Engineering.
- Prepare daily timesheets distributing labor to appropriate job and cost codes.
- Participate in regularly scheduled department meetings.
- Performs fire flow tests.
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years experience in water utility or related construction field.
- High school degree, Associates degree in engineering/construction technology preferred
- Computer competence and experience in digital technology including Word, Excel, and GIS.
- Knowledge of the interpretation of regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and construction related documents.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work under field conditions in a construction environment.
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs.
- Night and weekend worktime may be required to coordinate with construction schedules.
- Valid drivers license.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires constant operation of a computer and other office equipment such as printers, copiers, calculators.
- Must have the ability to visually inspect and review hard copy and online documents.
- Must be able to communicate, detect, converse with, discern, convey, express oneself, discuss and exchange information.
- Use written, verbal and audio communication and information sources.
- Must be able to occasionally move about inside the office and use stairs to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50 % of the time.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
