Job Summary: Food Service Director
The Food Service Director is responsible for managing the daily operations of the dietary department in a skilled nursing facility, ensuring the provision of nutritious, high-quality meals that meet residents’ needs and regulatory standards. This role oversees menu planning, food preparation, sanitation, budgeting, staff management, and compliance with state and federal guidelines, including Department of Health and CMS regulations.
- Plan, develop, and oversee food service programs to meet nutritional requirements and individual dietary needs.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations including health codes, safety standards, and dietary guidelines.
- Manage all dietary staff: hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating performance, and ensuring ongoing education.
- Prepare and maintain department budget, control costs, and manage inventory.
- Coordinate with clinical staff (dietitians, nurses, etc.) to ensure meals align with resident care plans.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety throughout the kitchen and dining areas.
- Conduct regular audits, inspections, and quality assurance checks to ensure compliance and resident satisfaction.
- Respond to resident concerns, preferences, and feedback with professionalism and compassion.
Requirements
- Associates Degree in Culinary, Business, or a related field required.
- Culinary or dietary management certification preferred (i.e. Certified Dietary Manager)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Exemplary customer service skills.
- Flexible with call-backs during emergency conditions.
- Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
- May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
- Minimum 2–3 years of food service management experience, preferably in long-term care or healthcare.
- Strong knowledge of dietary regulations, food safety practices, and special diets.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead a team, work collaboratively with other departments, and foster a positive dining experience.
- Ability to communicate well verbally with residents, families, & staff
