The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for supervising and maintaining the organization’s vehicle and equipment fleet, ensuring that all vehicles and equipment are in safe, efficient working condition. This position oversees the Vehicle Make-Ready/Driver and performs mechanical inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance. The Fleet Mechanic ensures the fleet is fully operational and in compliance with industry standards, while managing the daily tasks of both maintenance and administrative staff. The position requires an ASE Certified Mechanic with strong experience in both hands-on mechanical work and in a supervisory capacity.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent
ASE Certification as a mechanic (Automotive Service Excellence)
Minimum of 5 years of experience as an automotive or fleet mechanic
At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory role within an automotive or fleet setting
Extensive knowledge of vehicle systems, including diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes, and HVAC systems
Proficiency in diagnostic tools and repair equipment
Strong understanding of safety regulations related to vehicle maintenance and fleet operations
Small engine experience
Gas and electric utility cart knowledge
Must possess a valid Texas Driver License, good driving record, and be insurable on Midland College’s insurance policy
Preferred Qualifications
Technical degree or certification in automotive repair
Experience managing a fleet of varied vehicle types, including trucks, buses, utility vehicles, and small engines
Knowledge of EPA and DOT regulations regarding vehicle emissions and safety standards
Experience with hybrid or electric vehicles
Essential Functions
Supervise the Vehicle Make-Ready/Driver and other assigned staff, providing guidance and ensuring efficient operations
Perform routine and preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including diesel and gasoline engines, buses, trucks, specialty vehicles, and grounds equipment
Conduct diagnostic tests and inspections to determine necessary repairs and ensure all vehicles are maintained in accordance with manufacturer and regulatory requirements
Maintain detailed records of service, repairs, and maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance with organizational and legal standards
Coordinate repair schedules and part orders, working closely with vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective services
Train staff on proper vehicle maintenance techniques and safety procedures
Manage vehicle inspections and safety checks, ensuring all fleet vehicles meet state and federal safety standards
Monitor fuel efficiency and vehicle performance, recommending repairs or replacement when necessary
Respond to emergency breakdowns and repair fleet vehicles on-site or arrange for external service when needed
Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and vehicle-specific safety protocols during maintenance and repair activities
Participate in budget preparation for vehicle maintenance and repair costs, monitoring expenses to ensure alignment with financial targets
Ensure vehicles are clean, safe, mechanically sound condition prior to use
Assist with the maintenance of groundskeeping equipment as needed

May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, and outdoor weather conditions while working
