9-1-1 dispatchers in Midland County answer all emergency and non-emergency calls to the 9-1-1 Center. They dispatch responders from law enforcement, fire and EMS based on the nature of the call. This position requires quick decision-making, extreme multi-tasking abilities and working with many forms of computers and technology.
Before applying for this position, please take into consideration the following:
- 9-1-1 dispatchers work 12 hour shifts. Current openings are most likely night shift positions.
- 9-1-1 dispatchers work overtime. When someone is off for training, vacation or illness, the vacancy has to be filled with a dispatcher on a day off. Dispatchers can and do get ordered in to work overtime.
- It is important for 9-1-1 dispatchers to have healthy stress management skills. 9-1-1 dispatchers help people with tragic, life and death emergencies. This type of public safety work is demanding and stressful.
- We encourage you to do some research on 9-1-1. Listen to calls, read articles/books/posts and talk to people that are or have been in a public safety position before applying to make sure this career would be a good fit for you.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or G.E.D., ability to type at a minimum 35 wpm, computer skills, outstanding multi-tasking skills, ability to handle and perform well under stress, and excellent customer service. Ability and willingness to work full-time, 12-hour shifts, overtime, holidays, weekends, days/nights. Must pass a comprehensive background check, drug, and psychological testing.
