Position Title : Supervisor of Special Education

Department / Division : Special Education

Reports To : Director of Special Education

Position Summary

A Supervisor of Special Education is responsible for overseeing special education classroom programs, ancillary staff and other special education professionals (may include school social worker, psychologists, teacher specialist / consultant, etc.)

Terms of Employment

  • Administrative / Non-Bargaining
  • Full-time position, 251-day hours / day
  • Salary : $90,000-$108,000

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in the development, coordination and evaluation of special education programs and services.
  • Supervises staff assigned to classroom programs and activities within the classrooms / buildings.
  • Works to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.
  • Schedules, chairs and participates in Individual Educational Program Team meetings.
  • Meets with parents to discuss questions, concerns or complaints.
  • Coordinates transition processes for students entering and or exiting MCESA programs.
  • Confers with staff on needs of children, and facilitates student staffings.
  • Develops and administers policies and procedures affecting programs and services.
  • May oversee the referral process for children with disabilities.
  • Maintains appropriate student records, and creates appropriate reports.
  • May coordinate alternative assessments for students enrolled in MCESA programs.
  • May oversee medicaid billing procedures, and reviews Medicaid policies.
  • Performs related work as requested.
  • Qualification Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Special Education or related field and approval in one area of special education.
  • Full or temporary approval as a Michigan Supervisor of Special Education.
  • Three years administrative, managerial and / or teaching experience in special education.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Michigan Department of Education’s continuing education requirements for administrators.
  • Full approval in at least one area of special education.
  • Considerable knowledge of school administrative policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with and understanding various types of disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations affecting special education.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively work with staff, other agencies and the general public.
  • Professional maturity and high levels of discretion, integrity and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Parent and family collaboration.
  • Ability to comprehend the dynamics and sensitivity of an organization’s culture and the ability to solve related problems.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to word process, utilize software applications and use electronic mail.
  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Knowledge of school law and policy.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavior Supports, including certifiable physical restraint methods.
  • Knowledge of learning modalities and effective instructional strategies for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of a functionally based curriculum used within MCESA programs.
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and / or move up to 60 pounds. Frequent travel and / or driving to various off-site meetings or worksites is required. Noise levels are typically moderate.
