Job Description

 

The surgical technologist intern serves as an integral part of the surgical team by assisting in the care and preparation of surgical patients. The surgical technologist intern works under the supervision of registered nurses, certified surgical technologists, and surgeons to facilitate the safe and effective care of surgical patients, ensuring the operating room environment is safe, donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, issuing instruments to surgeon, and confirming the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS• Provides patient care across all age-specific populations including newborn/infant, pediatrics, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. • Applies principles and practices before, during and after the surgical procedure according to Operating Room Standards.• Assesses his/her own continuing educational needs to meet the requirements of the current technological developments.• Demonstrates effective time management in prioritizing and participating in the implementation of patient care.• Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills accurately and within a reasonable time frame.• Anticipates patient care problems and makes interventions based on an understanding of the physiological and psychosocial process and takes appropriate follow-up action.• Regularly consults and confers with other Operating Room staff members to obtain further information on surgical procedures, and equipment. Observes and assists others to increase personal knowledge.• Demonstrates accountability for decisions in preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies required during surgical procedure.• Seeks guidance and direction as necessary; follow channels of communication.• Participates in performance improvement activities.• Facilitates on time starts and efficient turnover time in compliance with defined unit standards.• Set-up tables, instruments, and supplies required for a variety of surgical procedures. • Issues proper instrumentation to the surgeon. • Practices effective interpersonal skills and utilizes established channels for communication. • Ability to rotate to all surgical areas including the Operating Room, Land and Delivery, Cardiovascular Operating Room, and Sterile Processing. • Develops individual goals for professional growth. • Participate in Monthly Department Staff Meetings (minimum of 75%).

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE• The Surgical Technologist Intern must be attending a CAAHEP-accredited program for Surgical Technology and be attending their second semester or further to qualify for internship.

• The Surgical Technologist Intern will work under the supervision of a graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology (according to Texas Surgical Technologist Law Sec 259.002).

• The Surgical Technologist Intern must consistently work towards graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited program while employed with immediate notification of dismissal or withdrawal from the CAAHEP-accredited program.

• The Surgical Technologist Intern must obtain BLS certification through the American Heart Association upon hire or transfer to department.

• The Surgical Technologist Intern must complete the following competencies within 3 months of hire or transfer to department.• Aseptic Technique• Gowning and gloving• Surgical hand scrub• Surgical case preparation• Sterile case set-up• Surgical Draping• Intraoperative actions• Postoperative actions

• Basic daVinci Robotic Surgery proficiency within 1 year of hire date.

• Upon graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited program, the Surgical Technologist Intern would apply for a position a desired position. With obligation to obtain CST certification within 6 months of graduation date from NBSTSA or NCCT (according to Texas surgical Technologist Law Sec 259.022).

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The individual must be able to: Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.
