Job Description
The CIS, with a focus on patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules and regulations; and policies, procedures and guidelines of the employing health care institution or practice setting. The CIS functions under his or her own education, licensure and/or certification and assumes accountability and responsibility for quality of care provided to patients and their families according to the standards of practice. The CIS demonstrates responsibility for continued competence in practice, and develops insight through reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and lifelong learning.
SHIFT AND SCHEDULE
Monday - Friday: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM with on call requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS• Scope of Practice - A cardiovascular invasive specialist completes a wide variety of duties on a day-to-day basis. They work regularly with many members of a health care team, including physicians, surgeons, and nurses. They also work closely with patients of all ages who experience heart-related conditions and complications • Practices technology founded upon theoretical knowledge and concepts, uses equipment and accessories consistent with the purposes for which they were designed, and employs procedures and techniques appropriately • Assesses situations; exercises care, discretion, and judgment; assumes responsibility for professional decisions; and acts in the best interest of the patient. • Acts as an agent through observation and communication to obtain pertinent information for the physician to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient and recognizes that interpretation and diagnosis are outside the scope of practice for the profession. • The cardiovascular invasive specialist uses equipment and accessories, employs techniques and procedures, performs services in accordance with an accepted standard of practice, and demonstrates expertise in minimizing radiation exposure to the patient, self, and other members of the healthcare team.• Preparing patients and equipment for cardiac catheterization and interventions, endovascular/vascular, and electrophysiology related diagnostic and interventional procedures.• Performing common catheterization interventions including, stent placements, balloon angioplasties, heart valve replacements, and electrophysiology tests. • Operating intracardiac or intravascular ultrasound equipment, fluoroscopy equipment, or other imaging systems.• Assisting with handling venous and arterial catheters and wires. • Monitoring blood pressure and heart rate using electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) equipment during procedures including coronary angiography, pacemaker implantation, aortic stenosis studies, peripheral procedures, and other vascular, endovascular, and cardiac related procedures.• Calculating hemodynamic or physiologic values, and record waveforms for patient records. • Retrieving and analyzing imaging and other data obtained during procedures.• Transports patients to and from procedural area. • Knowledge and ability to apply complex invasive cardiac and vascular principles, instrumentation, and techniques. • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology • Performs pre- and post-procedure care and monitoring. • Orients patients for catheterization or electrophysiology procedures. • Answers related questions to make patient comfortable
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE• A graduate of a certificate or degree granting program or post-secondary educational program in a health science which includes, but not limited to one of the following
• Cardiovascular Technology - Ultrasound - Respiratory Therapy - Nursing - Paramedic/EMT - Other allied health degree or certificate may be considered but not guaranteed.• Preferred to actively pursue Cardiovascular (CV) certification/registry while employed. • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 12 months of date of employment.• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
