Summary

The Behavioral Health Intern will gain hands-on experience working with patients and will contribute to meaningful projects under the supervision of experienced licensed behavioral health professionals that match the student's credentials (MSW, LPC, LP). The intern will be responsible for assessing the patient's psychosocial, spiritual, educational and other needs. In addition to assessment, interns will provide coordination, treatment and aftercare to patients. They will collaborate with their supervisor in development and implementation of individual care plans and interventions with patients. Interns will work as part of a treatment team and will actively contribute as part of the care team. Interns will become proficient in planning, executing and monitoring effectiveness of the care provided. Interns will provide resources to patients. Therefore, the ability to analyze, evaluate and discuss resources and educational information to ensure understanding to all educational levels is key to the role. The intern will play a pivotal role in maintaining the quality-of-care patients receive and will work actively to monitor patient progress on action plans and goals. Interns will also maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and documentation. Some behavioral health interns will also contribute ideas and feedback to the development of new programs and initiatives. They will research, collate information, collect and analyze data and prepare materials, reports and presentations.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties/responsibilities will vary depending on department assignment and past experience.

Under supervision, assesses the clinical status of patients.

Assists in the detection of "at risk" patients and intervenes to attenuate further psychological or physical deterioration.

Consults with internship supervisor as necessary and refers cases to other behavioral health providers for longer term specialty care as appropriate.

Facilitates and ensures patient engagement and follow-up care.

Works with care team to treat and manage patients with emotional and/or physical health problems efficiently and effectively.

Provides cognitive-behavioral interventions using evidence-based techniques.

Assists in preventing relapse in conditions that tend to recur over time.

Uses assessment tools with patients to assist in identifying concerns, triaging, and outcomes measurement.

Systematically documents treatment response and monitors patients (in person or by telephone) for changes in clinical symptoms and treatment side effects or complications related to medical or mental health conditions.

Assist in program development for groups and patient education tools (e.g., depression, pain, insomnia, stress, etc.).

Obtains and keeps available patient education materials about common mental health and substance use disorders and local available treatment options for distribution and education to patients and their family.

Work with health care team, patient, family and/or significant others to transition patients to the appropriate level/place of care.

Advocate, mediate, negotiate, and navigate with an emphasis on self-determination for the patient system, to formulate a cohesive plan for maintaining or improving the patient's health status, improving social supports, and moving the patient safely into less restrictive levels of care according to available resources.

Collaborate with the treatment team in competency/capacity determination, obtaining legal guardianship, involuntary psychiatric admission, ethical concerns, etc.

Under supervision, complete and disseminate all necessary legal and clinical documentation as needed for resolution.

Collaborates with team to provide information relating to admission, continued stay, discharge criteria, managed care, federal program regulations, reimbursement fundamentals, and regulatory standards.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Complete and document a standard assessment to: Eliminate barriers to treatment and discharge, increase patient/family satisfaction, improve appropriate utilization of resources. Completes all documentation and data entry requirements.

Assist in obtaining financial and other resources for patients and families in need.

Identify the need for and conduct family meetings, with or without the physician, that result in understanding, comfort, decision-making, and other important outcomes, such as discharge.

Integrate relevant theories of family dynamics, crisis intervention, strengths based, solution focused, trauma, and meaning of illness into everyday casework.

Summarize a patient and family situation concisely, with helpful guidance to non-behavioral health staff members about recommendations for actions to be taken and barriers to discharge.

Facilitates discharge planning for patients i.e. extended care placements, other facility transfers, and home care arrangements in collaboration with the health care team.

Actively participate in care coordination efforts to successfully identify high-risk factors and respond appropriately so that key information, next steps are captured and documented.

Is an active participant in care coordination meetings.

Maintains timely, clear and concise documentation in all required systems.

Provides pertinent clinical data to designated outside agencies to assure compliance with their requirements.

Assures compliance with regulatory requirements.

Attends applicable meetings and contributes during meetings.

Builds professional relationships with patient, families, facilities and resources to address conflict resolution with positive outcomes.

Willingly and consistently offer to help peers as needed.

Communicates teamwork, caring and compassion.

Provide excellent customer service with internal and external customers.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree is required

**Candidates are to be currently enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral Degree program in of Social Work, Psychology or Professional Counseling**

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICALWORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk in healthcare setting, including walking between buildings on campus. May require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
