The ED Technician functions primarily in direct patient care and demonstrates "competent" clinical practice with a variety of patients. The tech in the ED works as part of a team with a common goal of offering centered, timely care, in a safe and friendly environment. The tech in this position offers individualized compassionate care to emergency department patient's based on the direction of the physician and RN. The tech pleasantly provides nonjudgmental care for the acutely ill, as well as the non-acute patient. This position requires the ability to perform multiple ancillary roles including but not limited to, performing duties and procedures within the scope of their practice as assigned, specimen collection, vital signs, EKG's stocking of supplies, cleaning, clerical responsibilities, lab collection and other duties as assigned. This position requires assisting the nurse, physician, and other members of the team to provide relationship-based patient centered care. The tech in this role works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a friendly and frequently stressful environment.
Responsibilities
(40%)* The tech as part of a multidisciplinary team, maintains a friendly customer oriented attitude at all times. It is expected that all team members will work together to provide the best possible care to MyMichigan Health's patients, families, visitors, staff, community members, and any other person that is encountered while representing MyMichigan Health. It is expected that at all times the tech will treat every person they encounter with non-judgmental: kindness, compassion, respect and relationship based care.
(30%)* Performs quick registrations when ambulance ore expedited patients arrive int eh department, attaches ID bracelet and ensures proper patient identifiers are performed. Keeps track of supplies and notifies appropriate person as supplies are needed. Makes arrangements for bed assignments through contact with patient placement as required. Prepares paperwork to go with patient's who are transferred to other facilities.
(20%)* Provides direct patient care including answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned. Follows direction from RN to provide services as prescribed by the physician's authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based practice that is within the tech's scope of practice.
( 10%)* The tech is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state and Federal regulations and guidelines. The tech maintains knowledge of MyMichigan Health and ED specific policies and procedures relating to the care provided and maintains professional standards.
Demonstrates awareness of specific safety concerns in department. Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies
Implements and maintains isolation techniques per policy.
Maintain department equipment as necessary.
Identifies and communicates concern regarding unsafe conditions or equipment promptly.
Utilizes appropriate lift equipment on a routine basis.
Collects vital signs and weight.
Participates in direct patient care. Moves, lifts, and transports patients as required.
Performs EKG.
Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies.
Recognizes and displays pleasant, friendly and cooperative manner to public.
Maintains clean and tidy exam room, including inventory of room supplies.
Maintains orderly patient flow.
Cleans equipment.
Is familiar with cardiac monitors, can apply leads and operate equipment.
Can assist with emergency equipment and procedures under the direct supervision of the RN or ED physician.
Completes documentation as required.
Assists RN to ensure patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.
Communicates identified problems to appropriate personnel and implements actions to assure patient needs are met.
Assists unit in maintaining the area according to Joint Commission standards.
All Clerical Duties
Answers telephone.
Assists with medical procedures and minor surgery.
Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique.
Is familiar with safety and emergency procedures.
Observes fall safety precautions.
Notifies police/sheriff department of any assaults, suspected child abuse, rapes, domestic violence or any other injuries inflicted other than accidently.
Notifies animal shelter or sheriff department of all animal bites.
Distributes incoming mail on a daily basis.
Assists with ordering of supplies.
This may include: orders from purchasing weekly for medical supplies, lab supplies and office supplies. Special invoices for supplies not available in storeroom. Placing orders with Pharmacy and stock the supply carts and fill hand cleaner bottles.
Is accountable in following medical center policy and procedures and work attendance.
Participates in continuing education program, Medical Center Computer based learning modules, and ED in-service training.
NIMS 100 and 700 within 6 months of hire or transfer date.
All other duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures
BLS: Basic Life Support
Within 3 months of hire or transfer
PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification
Must hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as:
- a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the state of Michigan,
- or be certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) in the State of Michigan
- or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan
- or successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program.
*For current PCT's with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician will be offered*
NIMS: National Incident Management System
NIMS 100 and 700 within 6 months of hire or transfer date.
TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt
Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification)
Required Education
High school diploma or GED is required

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Organizational skills needed to prioritize workload.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
This position must show knowledge, ability and competence in treating patients who range in age from pre-natal to 100 years.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Very Heavy. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 100 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday over 50 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% of the workday) 20 lbs.
