Summary

This position provides advanced emergency medical care to the sick and/or injured as trained and licensed by the State of Michigan. The desired result of the paramedic's intervention is improved patient outcome.

Responsibilities

(50%)* Acts independently to formulate and initiate a plan of intervention for medical and traumatic emergencies. Invasive medical interventions include: pleural decompression, cricothyrotomy, endotracheal intubation, interosseous access, intravenous access insertion of esophageal obturator airway, and blood sugar analysis. Noninvasive monitoring and management techniques include: vital sign interpretation, cardiac rhythm analysis, 12 lead interpretation, cardiac defibrillation/cardioversion, use of external pacemaker, analysis of pulse oximetry, and proper delivery of oxygen therapy.

(25%)* Assesses patients during inter-hospital transfers. Evaluation and intervention is initiated by the paramedic. Additional medical equipment is often utilized to maintain optimal patient care. Examples of equipment include neonatal isolette, intra-aortic balloon pump, and intravenous infusion machines.

(25%)* Supervises field medical management of ancillary rescue personnel. This includes any physician not identified with the Midland/Gladwin Medical Control Authority, any Medical Center employee, Michigan State Police, Midland and Gladwin City Police, County Sheriff Department, all County and adjacent fire departments.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Drafts a computer report documenting assessment, intervention, and outcome of all patients receiving care.

Generates ongoing public awareness and education programs to insure that medical center staff, physicians, and the general public perceive this service (EMS) and the Medical Center in a positive manner.

Evaluates readiness and safety of emergency equipment and vehicles.

This includes cardiac monitor, external pacemaker, pulse oximeter, laryngoscope, and any/all equipment required by the State of Michigan.

Included is the assessment of the emergency vehicles safety.

The paramedic determines the road worthiness of the vehicles.

Cleans and polishes EMS vehicles and EMS stations on a daily basis.

Included is the decontamination of any vehicle/equipment after unsafe exposure to contaminated substances.

Certifications and Licensures

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer

DMVCHECK - DMV Record Check

Required Equivalent Experience -

EMT-P - Paramedic Required Equivalent Experience

PALS - Ped Advance Life Support

Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer

PHTLS - Pre Hospital Trauma Life Sup

Required Equivalent Experience - Beginning on July 1, 2023, Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) will be required. Employees who hold this position, hire or transfer into this position will have 1 year to achieve this certification and will be required to maintain it based on the certification renewal period.

TEAM ADVANCED - Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt Required Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification)

Education: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of emergency medicine as normally acquired through 2 years of emergency education culminating in licensure as an Emergency Medical Services - Paramedic.

Knowledge of pre-hospital care as normally acquired through 2 years' experience working in a Medical Center or similar healthcare setting.

Hazardous Materials Management.

Ability to function independently.

Ability to analyze patient condition, synthesizes all information gathered, and coordinates a precise treatment plan for any/all emergent conditions.

In conjunction with setting up this treatment plan, the paramedic's ability to negotiate with patient and family to assure compliance is fundamental.

Ability to triage a mass casualty incident (the sorting of and allocation of treatment to patients according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors).

Knowledge of cardiac rhythm analysis, pharmacology, invasive techniques including pleural decompression, cricothryotomy, endotracheal intubation, interosseous access, central and peripheral intravenous access, insertion of esophageal obturator airway, blood sugar analysis and non-invasive techniques including pulse oximetry analysis, heart and lung sound analysis, and blood pressure analysis in less than optimal environments.

Basic operation of external pacemaker.

Knowledge of extrication and special rescue.

Geographical skills needed to access emergency locations.

Knowledge training and licensure to meet State of Michigan requirements, MMC fleet insurance requirements and any other requirements developed by the medical center.

Ability to direct ancillary personnel, i.e., fire rescue, law enforcement, bystanders, etc. Ability to immobilize any and all potential fractures/dislocations, including spinal cord injuries.

Excellent driving skills for emergency vehicles.

Interpersonal skills needed to console/comfort victim and/or families and friends.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.

Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Very Heavy. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry over 100 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) over 50 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% of the workday) over 20 lbs.
