Primary Purpose:
The Counselor - Special Education is responsible for planning and providing counseling services to special education students, evaluating their needs, and implementing therapeutic interventions to enhance their educational experience. This role requires collaboration with teachers, parents, and other professionals to support students with disabilities and ensure they receive appropriate services and support.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, LPC, or a related field is required.
Valid state Special Education certification or licensure as a school counselor or equivalent is required.
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, families, and staff.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proficiency in using technology and software for documentation and communication.
Experience:
Experience working with students with special needs in an educational setting.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Plan and provide counseling services to special education students.
2. Evaluate students and provide therapeutic interventions to address educational needs.
3. Conduct counseling evaluations and prepare thorough evaluation reports.
4. Assist in the creation of Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
5. Consult with professionals regarding students' goals and objectives before ARD/IEP meetings.
6. Make recommendations for intervention strategies to enhance student success.
7. Maintain appropriate, data-driven professional records and submit required documentation on time.
8. Conduct observations of students to support teachers and school administration.
9. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required by federal and state rules and regulations and district policy and procedures.
10. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
11. Maintain strict confidentiality of student information.
12. Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment including but not limited to current evaluation practices, case management strategies, instructional and behavioral strategies for students.
13. Demonstrate behavioral that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
14. Complete all other duties as assigned.
