Railroad Design Engineer
Job Summary
The Railroad Design Engineer is responsible for creating railroad track designs (mainline, sidings, and yard designs or reconfigurations), developing project plan sets, , and reviewing railroad track designs for quality prepared by other consultants and third parties. The role supports various railroads and their respective internal structures as well as external customers seeking to secure service from a railroad. In addition to design responsibilities, the Railroad Design Engineer will also participate in railroad inspections and construction management.
Responsibilities and Capabilities
A proactive, hands-on role in creating railroad track designs using Computer-Aided Design Software (AutoCAD, Microstation, OpenRail, etc.)
Develop railroad track designs through the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases
Development of ballasted and non-ballasted track structures, track alignments, track sections and profiles, and respective grading and drainage
Assessments of horizontal and vertical clearances for railroad infrastructure and rail vehicles
Coordinating with other respective disciplines to ensure all necessary data and inputs are included in project designs
Preparation of project deliverables documents and plans
Preparation of the project design calculations, technical reports, and assist in the development of the design analysis
Perform calculation(s) of quantities, preparation of cost estimates, project specifications, and construction bid / tender documents
Provide technical direction to junior staff (designers / engineers / drafters) and participate in oversight of work undertaken by them
Work with project team / provide input on the development of design schedule and budgets
Use Google Maps and other programs to review existing track layouts in order to resolve options available for track additions, modifications, and expansions
Developing new or altering existing drawings, plans, standard plans, and schematics as needed in AutoCAD, Microstation, OpenRail, or other drafting software(s)
Conduct site inspections to collect field data for respective projects
Conduct periodic track inspection for respective projects or client needs
Assist in developing track designs or reconfigurations
Review and comment on track designs provided by internal and external customers
Develop track design alternatives (i.e.shoo-fly or temporary track phasing) to accommodate temporary track alignments, track outages, and other emergent conditions
Review proposed design changes, shop drawings, and respond to project questions
Assist in the development of proposals and other business initiatives
Interact with clients and transportation agencies regularly or as needed
Ability to manage multiple tasks at once
Strong work ethic and ability to self-motivate
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Willingness to travel for project or clients needs (approx. 25% travel)
Ability to work a non-standard work week when necessary
Strong desire to learn and progress career within the rail industry
Various tasks as assigned by manager
Experience
Experience with railroad track engineering and complex, multi-discipline railroad projects
Experience with railroad / transportation / roadway design projects, civil site development, and / or permitting
Minimum 4 years experience in engineering consulting preferred
Experience with railroad construction and trackwork preferred
Experience with surveying and utilizing site surveys to develop track designs
Experience with and proficient in the use of AutoCAD, Microstation, OpenRail, and / or OpenBridge software suites.Familiarity with drafting softwares is required.
Demonstrated experience delivering project deliverables within a schedule
Experience with the design of railroad track infrastructure, including track alignments, turnout design, yard track design, and proper drainage requirements
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
Proficient with various railroad specifications and standards and their applications
Proficient with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards and their application
Education / Certification / Designation
Bachelors Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering from a recognized and accredited college or university
FRA Track Inspector qualification a plus
Location : Anywhere within the Southeast
