Job Summary:The Extraction Manager oversees all aspects of the cannabis extraction process, ensuring safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. This role requires a leader who can manage a team of extraction technicians while maintaining strict adherence to regulatory guidelines, production schedules, and quality standards. The Extraction Manager is responsible for optimizing extraction yields, troubleshooting equipment issues, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Extraction Operations
- Oversee daily extraction operations, including but not limited to ethanol, hydrocarbon, and CO2 extraction processes.
- Manage and monitor all stages of extraction, including material preparation, extraction, winterization, filtration, and distillation processes.
- Ensure the production of high-quality cannabis concentrates, oils, and distillates that meet regulatory and company standards.
- Maintain equipment and ensure it is operating at peak efficiency; coordinate regular maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Conduct detailed analysis of extraction yields and optimize processes to increase output and minimize waste.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations governing cannabis extraction, production, and safety protocols.
- Maintain up-to-date records, including batch production records, waste logs, and cleaning logs, in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Implement and uphold safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all employees and adherence to OSHA standards.
- Lead safety drills and participate in audits and inspections by regulatory agencies or internal quality teams.
Team Leadership & Management
- Supervise and mentor a team of extraction technicians and specialists.
- Train team members on SOPs, safety protocols, and best practices for extraction and production.
- Provide daily direction, feedback, and performance evaluations to employees, ensuring accountability for meeting production targets.
- Foster a positive and collaborative team environment that emphasizes communication, growth, and employee development.
Quality Assurance & Process Improvement
- Work closely with the Quality Assurance (QA) team to ensure that products meet or exceed quality standards.
- Identify and implement process improvements to maximize efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product consistency.
- Develop, maintain, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all aspects of extraction.
- Conduct root cause analysis on any production issues and implement corrective actions as needed.
Reporting & Inventory Management
- Maintain accurate inventory of raw materials, solvents, and finished products using inventory management systems.
- Track production data and prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on production efficiency, yields, and issues.
- Coordinate with the Supply Chain and Procurement teams to ensure an adequate supply of raw materials.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in cannabis extraction, pharmaceutical production, or food manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of extraction methods, including ethanol, hydrocarbon, and CO2 processes.
- Previous experience in a leadership role, with demonstrated ability to manage and develop a team.
- Familiarity with cannabis industry regulations, including METRC tracking, health, and safety standards.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, production data, and regulatory guidelines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and inventory tracking software.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work in hot, cold, and wet environments.
- Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and working on machinery.
- Comfortable working with strong-smelling cannabis plants and solvents.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, goggles, and respirators as required.
