Description

Organ Procurement DCU Clinical Specialist serves as clinical specialist within MTN’s Donor Care Unit. Provides ongoing skill training and development of Organ Procurement staff. Works with MTN Clinical Leadership to ensure day to day oversight of DCU supplies and equipment. Serves as a role model for MTN Behavioral Competencies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

CLINICAL

1.    Responds to DCU for support during organ donor admission and throughout the donation process during on-call schedule and as needed pending organ                     donor activity.
2.    Maintains proficiency and performs procedures in the DCU (bronchoscopy, line placement, echocardiogram) and others as needed for case activity.
3.    Serves as clinical expert with utilization/trouble shooting of DCU equipment.
4.    Serves as “head of bed” care during the organ donor recovery. 
5.    Performs frozen section slide preparation and participates in pathology call schedule. 
6.    Participates in training and development of new clinical staff under the direction of Organ Procurement Leadership and in collaboration with the Organ                     Procurement Clinical Educator when staff are working in the DCU.
7.    Demonstrates proficient knowledge and skill to facilitate a case from authorization to recovery.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AS CLINICAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST

1.    In collaboration with Administrator on Call (AOC), serves as clinical resource to Organ Procurement staff during donor referral assessment and case                         management, providing onsite or phone assistance as needed.
2.    In collaboration with MTN Intensivist, serves as resource for donor management recommendations.
3.    Reviews documentation in TrueNorth and UNET, prior to allocation.
4.    Reviews match runs with organ procurement transplant coordinator and renal placement coordinator and assists with guidance during the allocation  p                       process.

ADMINISTRATIVE

1.    Participates in monthly CSS/AOC schedule. 
2.    Participates in all aspects of the donation process in periods of high activity, short staffing or as otherwise needed.
3.    Assists with documentation compliance – annual audit/in collaboration with Quality and Education Departments.
4.    Performs daily assessment of DCU, identifying needs and ensuring ready for donor care at any time.
5.    In collaboration with OP Leadership and RSCC, ensures meds, supplies and equipment are stocked at all times, including tracking of expiration dates.
6.    In collaboration with Biomedical Engineer, ensures required QC and equipment maintenance is achieved.
7.    In collaboration with OP Leadership, update MTN SOPs with changes specific to DCU.

 

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. RN or PA licensure required. Advanced degree or certification strongly preferred.
  2. 5 years’ experience as an OPC II or higher or combination of experience and education providing equivalent knowledge required.
  3. Ability to obtain CPTC Certification.
  4. Participates in 50% call schedule.
  5. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy.  Must have reliable transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines.  Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.
  6. Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
  7. Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak and communicate clearly and accurately to convey information to MTN stakeholders in person or by phone; written documentation of relevant information in a professional manner.
  8. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
  9. Possess the ability to operate telephones, computers, and surgical equipment.
  10. OSHA Category I – Exposed regularly to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties.  Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
  11. Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
