Summary

The Admissions Counselor reports directly to the Director of Admission and is primarily responsible for advising and counseling prospective students. The Admission Counselor will assist with all aspects of the admission cycle including reviewing applications and making admission recommendations. The incumbent will be required to represent Midwestern University at national, regional, and local recruitment events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise and counsel prospective students
  • Provide detailed knowledge of all admissions processes and requirements for all programs
  • Review applications, evaluate credentials, and recommend admissions decisions
  • Represent Midwestern University at national, regional, and local recruitment events
  • Provide formal program presentations to various groups and organizations
  • Maintain and update applicate records
  • Prepare and disseminate weekly and yearly reports
  • Coordinate and facilitate on-campus interview days for all MWU programs
  • Communicate with all programs and departments on campus
  • Collaborate with program directors, faculty and staff
  • Serve as admissions liaison/specialist for assigned MWU programs
  • Provide campus tours and information sessions
  • Assist with the matriculation process for new students
  • Additional duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required; Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration preferred. Must have at least one year of professional office experience with strong customer service skills. Prior experience working within a higher education setting or an admissions department is preferred. Experience working with college admissions software is preferred. Ability to work some evenings may be required. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to provide accurate and concise information.

The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service, organizational time-management, and problem-solving skills. The ability to multi-task and self-initiate with minimal supervision. Possess computer and technical skills including expertise with all Microsoft Office software and database management. Must represent MWU in a professional manner and work within a diverse academic community.                

Computer Skills                                               

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). 

Language Skills                                                

Intermediate skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability                                             

Intermediate skills:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Intermediate skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions and proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision.
