What are the responsibilities and job description for the Second Shift Custodian position at Mifflinburg Area Middle School?
SUMMARY:
To serve as a Custodian in the daily maintenance and cleaning of District buildings with a focus on achieving efficiently maintained and cleaned facilities. Custodians shall utilize their skills to help make the school facilities an attractive, pleasant, safe, and productive place in which to learn and work.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Hourly 12-month, support staff position. Typical workdays are 8 hours in length, with occasional work occurring outside normal working hours during the week and weekends. The position may also involve work during support staff holidays.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is mostly indoors throughout the district facilities with some outdoor work when removing trash from buildings.
- Work is often performed in indoor environments with exposure to cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
- Occasionally work in hot, cold, dirty, wet, and noisy areas
- Frequent twisting, bending, stooping, and lifting of all types of weight up to 50 pounds
- Standing and walking for long periods of time
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Possess good time management skills with the ability to work with minimal supervision

- Strength and ability to lift at least 50 pounds, to operate floor care and carpet cleaning machines, move furnishings, and equipment and to shovel snow when needed.
- General computer knowledge needed for employee portal software utilized by the Mifflinburg Area School District
- Possess a strong customer focus
- Knowledge of methods and materials used in school maintenance and cleaning practices
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the maintenance/cleaning practices
- Ability to utilize equipment and tools of the maintenance/cleaning practices
- Ability to troubleshoot and determine solutions for the repair of maintenance/cleaning problems
- Ability to work off ladders
- Be available to work evening and/or weekend hours when necessary
- Current Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances; as well as Mandated Reporter training requirements.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma and/or Equivalent
- Public School Experience (preferred)
SPECIFIC POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: In conducting this role, the essential duties of the Custodian position shall include, but are not limited to the following:
- Use of custodial skills to provide a safe, comfortable, and productive place to learn and work.
- Custodians shall be responsible for the proper care, order, and cleanliness of the building, equipment, furnishings, and grounds (including playgrounds, athletic fields, and snow removal).
- Custodians shall be responsible for minor repairs and maintenance work and may be called upon by the Facilities Department to assist in any major work in their building.
- Be responsible for the ongoing cleaning and preventive maintenance of the facilities.
- Perform cleaning projects as directed.
- Be helpful, courteous, and polite to all occupants and visitors of the buildings.
- Maintain proper security of all district owned facilities.
- Report all safety hazards and repair needs to the immediate supervisor in writing.
- Be available to work overtime as events and emergencies dictate.
- Perform other duties as directed by the administration.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Facilities using an approved form.
