What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adult Education Instructor/Program Facilitator position at Milagro House?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Adult Education Instructor/Program Facilitator works in tandem with the Director of Education to design and deliver customized educational plans that support the individual academic and career goals of women participating in the Milagro House program. This position will share responsibility for classroom instruction that aligns with high school equivalency (HiSET) subject test preparation, as well as academic support for post-secondary students actively pursuing a degree or certification from a post-secondary educational institution. The Adult Education Instructor/Program Facilitator will also work in tandem with education staff to design programming that supports life skills and career development, and will have the responsibility of managing program delivery and outcomes.
KEY FUNCTIONS:
Academic Instruction:
- Work with the Director of Education to deliver instruction and academic support for adult learners seeking their high school equivalency credential. Instruction is centered on gaining proficiency in HiSet test subject areas (Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing).
- Provide academic support for women seeking a post-secondary credential. This includes arranging for individualized tutoring in post-secondary subject areas as needed.
- Create an instructional and advisory environment that aligns with a “partnership” philosophy rather than a hierarchical “teacher over student” structure.
- Create a culture of learning that empowers women enrolled in the program to successfully complete their educational goals as adult learners.
- Set and maintain clear expectations around academic goals and instill in students a sense of personal responsibility.
- Identify and coordinate the academic resources needed to support each woman’s educational journey.
- Coordinate with the Director of Education to perform a weekly review of each woman’s progress.
- Work closely with volunteer, subject-based tutors who provide individualized academic support to the women in the program.
Life Skills/Career Preparedness:
- Work with the Director of Education to identify, plan, and implement opportunities and workshops that
support financial literacy, healthy parenting and relationships, self-care, nutrition, housing
(landlord/tenant responsibilities, reviewing and understanding a lease), etc.
- Work with the Director of Education to identify, plan, and implement career preparedness workshops and
opportunities.
- Facilitate relevant job shadowing, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities that relate to education
and career goals.
- Work with staff to cultivate partnerships with local employers. Coordinate industry/employer tours for
program participants that promote interest in potential employers/careers.
General:
- Maintain relevant program statistics that accurately measure milestones and program outcomes. Use data to evaluate program effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement as necessary. Provide information and data as requested for grant reporting.
- Provide staff support as part of annual community-based fundraising events (Evening of Miracles, ExtraGive) as needed.
- Serve as “on call” staff (for emergency-only phone calls) on a rotating schedule (typically once every 4-5 weeks).
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or human services field.
- Experience with academic instruction for adult learners is a must.
- Have (or be able to obtain successfully) child abuse clearances and criminal background checks.
- Valid PA Driver’s License.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES:
- Familiarity and experience working with a diverse demographic. Knowledge of the unique challenges faced by women and children facing poverty and homelessness is a plus.
- Familiarity with the concept of trauma-informed care. Maintain a core approach centered in compassion, respect and an understanding of healthy and ethical boundaries.
- Commitment to, and an understanding of, the role education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty.
- Strong moral compass and commitment to professional, ethical boundaries.
- Highly organized with the ability to think creatively and handle several tasks simultaneously.
- Team player and excellent communicator. Able to leverage personal strengths, and the strengths of team members, to reach common goals and outcomes.
- Comfortable working as part of a small non-profit team.
