Location: Mildred G. Fields Memorial Library, 1075 A East Van Hook St. Milan, TN
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 9:00AM-5:00PM, or 10:00AM-6:00PM, Some Saturdays 9:00AM-12:00PM
Salary Range:$10-$13 an hour
Job Objective:
The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the library, helping to create a welcoming and engaging environment for patrons of all ages. This position involves assisting library users, processing and organizing materials, requesting items from other libraries, and ensuring a clean, organized space. The Library Assistant is also responsible for basic administrative and clerical tasks, contributing to a smooth-running, customer-focused library. Additionally, the Library Assistant conducts regular outreach at senior assisted living facilities to foster community connections. This includes reading to residents and engaging them in meaningful activities that promote literacy, companionship, and lifelong learning beyond the library walls.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Applicant must be able to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations, which include but are not limited to:
Process new materials and prepare them for daily circulation.
Cover any books that are not covered by vendors.
Preparing all ILL requests coming in and out of our library.
Sort, shelve, and organize library materials to ensure they are in the proper order and accessible.
Make calls to inform patrons of overdue items.
Compile and organize all Material Safety Data sheets for any chemicals used.
Send monthly overdue letters.
Assisting Library patrons in the use of all library resources including but not limited to, basic computer tasks, library databases, accessing online resources, and navigating the internet.
Assist in the preparation of book displays.
Conduct regular outreach at senior assisted living facilities to foster community connections.
Assisting with library program preparation and implementation.
Providing friendly, high-quality customer service to library patrons.
Work daily shifts at the circulation desk and assist at other times as needed.
Cross-train for other duties as needed.
Ensure the library’s policies and procedures are carried out.
Perform any other duties assigned by the Library Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work with technical jargon and translate that to the library workplace.
Ability to perform daily tasks using computer software.
Knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office products, Google Drive, Canva, and Internet.
Ability to prioritize work.
Ability to count money and make change.
Ability to operate basic office equipment.
Ability to provide courteous public service.
Ability to learn principles and practices of professional library work.
Ability to work independently, as well as with a team.
Ability to lift and carry packages/equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.
A working knowledge of popular books, authors, and trends in various genres.
Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age or older.
High School Diploma or the equivalent is required.
Library experience is highly desired.
Experience working with the general public is highly desired.
Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Physical:
Ability to stand for substantial periods of time.
Ability to lift books and related library materials, up to 35 lb. per load.
Ability to regularly use computer keyboards, requiring hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity.
Ability to stay on task with regular interruptions.
Ability to deal with minimal noise from children's activities.
Ability to deal with odors associated with people, library materials, and fumes.
Ability to deal with wide temperature variations.
Mental:
Must be able to work independently as well as with a team.
Must be flexible, creative, and patient.
Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends.
Must be able to work or deal with all types of people.
