Military Deli & Bakery Services (MDBS) operates deli and bakery departments in 103 military commissary stores across the United States. As the largest operator of deli departments in U.S. military commissaries, we are seeking a District Manager to oversee operations at six locations, primarily in South Carolina.
This position is an exciting opportunity for a motivated leader who will work remotely from a home office and travel frequently to military bases, mostly by car with occasional air travel. The role includes a company car and necessary office equipment and requires approximately 40% overnight travel. The ideal candidate will reside in South Carolina.
Position Summary:
The District Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations and management of multiple deli and bakery departments within military commissary stores. This role requires a strong leader who can develop and motivate store teams, ensure food safety and operational efficiency, maintain a high level of customer service, and drive sales growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Financial Management
- Regularly visit store locations to ensure company standards are met.
- Identify operational challenges and proactively provide training and support.
- Supervise local managers and store teams in all aspects of production and sales of deli, bakery, and hot food items.
- Ensure consistent application of company policies, procedures, and reporting standards.
- Monitor store conditions to ensure compliance with military standards.
- Oversee staffing, training, customer service, product presentation, cleanliness, and sanitation.
- Promote and enforce safety procedures, ensuring monthly safety meetings are conducted at each location and personally leading at least one meeting per quarter.
- Maximize sales performance while effectively managing labor, inventory, margins, and salvage costs.
- Approve and review weekly work schedules to align with business needs and budget requirements.
- Conduct monthly inventory reviews alongside the Deli/Bakery Manager at designated locations.
- Foster a positive work environment that promotes high employee morale, retention, and low turnover.
- Serve as Deli/Bakery Manager at a location as needed.
Customer Service
- Ensure the highest level of customer service across all locations.
- Empower Deli/Bakery Managers and team members to deliver exceptional service.
- Monitor DeCA Customer Surveys to maintain acceptable performance standards.
Human Resources & Staff Development
- Develop and mentor Deli/Bakery Managers, Assistant Managers, and Shift Leaders.
- Provide direct, honest, and constructive feedback to team members regarding performance.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to address performance concerns and implement improvement plans.
- Work with HR to proactively recruit and maintain appropriate staffing levels.
- Ensure compliance with MDBS policies and procedures.
- Monitor payroll timekeeping practices to ensure compliance with MDBS and labor policies, including part-time/full-time status regulations.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum two years of general management experience in food service. Preferred background in deli and/or bakery operations.
- Experience in retail supermarket chains and/or multi-unit operations is a plus.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to motivate and manage staff at all levels.
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Food Safety Manager Certificate.
- Proficiency in financial analysis and operational assessment.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to use MDBS databases and software programs.
- Valid drivers license with a good driving record (required for use of a company vehicle).
- Must pass the military background check to obtain base access credentials.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Availability to work during business hours, weekends, and evenings as needed.
- Ability to travel frequently by car and plane.
- Ability to read and analyze written documents and information on a computer screen.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple work pressures.
- Professional and respectful written (email) and verbal communication skills.
- Strong listening and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to carry and lift 30-50 lbs.
- Ability to stand for an entire shift and operate equipment.
- Frequent repetitive motion while using deli meat and cheese slicers.
