Summary

About the Position : This position is located within the Directorate of Clinical Support Lab / Clinical Pathology or Clinical Support Microbiology for Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA.

Performs a wide variety of testing in the areas of STAT / routine hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, immunoassays, Blood Bank, microbiology, specimen processing and phlebotomy.

Duties

Maintains accurate records utilizing Levy Jennings charts and ensures all QC results fall within established control limits prior to releasing patient results.

Performs a variety of immunohematologic tests and examinations which individually and collectively are difficult and complex in the Blood Bank field.

Performs antibody studies with one or more red cell panels, elution techniques, etc., referring results to the supervisor for review of further studies.

Select, performs and monitors the performance of a wide variety of tests using complex automated analytical systems.

Performs high complexity tests including Total Iron-Binding Capacity and High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol as part of Lipid testing.

Performs a wide variety of hematology and coagulation testing involving the use of complex automated instrumentation and cell interpretation utilizing microscopic techniques.

Performs urinalysis testing utilizing macroscopic and microscopic techniques.

Inoculates, cultivates, isolates, classifies and identifies bacterial and other microorganisms present in body fluids, exudates, surface, or autopsy and surgical specimens.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.

This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.

This position requires the completion of an Occupational Health pre-employment Physical Examination.

This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.

This position has a requirement to lift up to 40lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

The position requires Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Professional Certification or Medical laboratory Scientist (MLS) Professional Certification.

This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.

This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.

This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and / or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Professional Certification : This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) OR Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is required.

Specialized Experience : One year of specialized experience which includes : 1) performing complex testing in a clinical laboratory setting; and 2) checking laboratory results for accuracy and validity; and 3) maintaining and / or troubleshooting laboratory equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade / level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education : One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.

Combination of Education and Experience : A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
