The Institute hosts more than 200 events each year, with our annual flagship event, Global Conference, bringing together 4,500 participants from around the world, featuring more than 900 speakers throughout 200 sessions over the course of the event.

About Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy

One of four pillars at the Milken Institute, MI Strategic Philanthropy advises individuals, corporations, and foundations on the most strategic ways to ensure their philanthropic investments make an equitable, transformative impact, and offers tools and recommendations for making philanthropy more effective. In addition to in-depth research, reports, and guides, we design and build programs including, funding initiatives, research collaboratives, large-scale innovation programs, and high-level events. Finally, we also foster peer learning communities to accelerate knowledge-sharing and promote partnership. MI Strategic Philanthropy’s three portfolio of programmatic work include SPARC (Science Philanthropy Accelerator for Research and Collaboration), Environmental & Social innovation Philanthropy (ESI), and Philanthropy Leadership Collective (PLC).

About The Position

We are looking for a senior associate to support Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy’s PLC, which is comprised of peer learning groups for funders with shared interest areas or funding modalities. Developing thought leadership and event programming that advances the philanthropic sector at large is also another central aspect of this portfolio’s endeavors. A self-starting senior associate has the potential to play a substantive role in directly supporting both external philanthropic partners and Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy overall.

Responsibilities

  • Support activities related to PLC affinity group management, including facilitating virtual touchpoints, coordinating meetings, researching potential participants, tracking invitations, preparing materials, note-taking, conducting specific analysis as requested, etc.
  • Coordinate and conduct research activities on philanthropic trends and best practices, as well as change models of interest to our philanthropic partners, which could include facilitating meetings with internal and external stakeholders, desktop research, literature reviews, etc.
  • Write up executive-level research findings and recommendations that can be shared with stakeholders through reports, research briefs, summary tables, dashboards, and PowerPoint presentations, etc.
  • Apply research learnings to plan, design, and potentially launch new programs and initiatives on behalf of philanthropic partners
  • Stay current on major philanthropic players and news within the sector globally to support Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy event programming across the Institute’s convening calendar
  • Contribute to communications efforts to build awareness of MI Philanthropy programming, philanthropy resources, and overall opportunities to engage with the Milken Institute amongst the philanthropic and nonprofit communities.
  • Duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field, Masters degrees preferred
  • 3 years of full-time work experience, preferably in philanthropy or consulting
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly PPT and Excel
  • Strong professional research and writing skills

  • Curiosity and creativity that can be and has been applied to learning new subjects quickly, and communicating about them with a high degree of accuracy;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and identify key insights;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively present complex information to non-technical stakeholders;
  • Exceptional listening and interpersonal skills to understand the needs of different stakeholders and be able to act accordingly;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage and prioritize concurrent responsibilities and proactively manage to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to stay cool under pressure, and give and receive feedback constructively;
  • Personal attitude that includes being entrepreneurial, collaborative, action-oriented, flexible, positive, problem-solving, and willing to adapt to changing situations.

Working Conditions & Travel Requirements

This position will work in a professional office environment on a hybrid schedule consisting of three (3) days per week reporting in-person to the Washington, DC, office location (Tuesday – Thursday), with the remaining two (2) days working remotely. Please understand, this schedule is subject to change at the Institute’s sole discretion.

This person will also be required to travel occasionally to other offices and/or venues to assist with events as needed, requiring occasional work outside of traditional hours. International along with domestic travel is possible. Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.
