The Facilities Manager helps plan, manage, and supervise the maintenance and safety operations of the Zoo and Zoo property. The Facilities Manager is responsible for maintaining Zoo buildings, grounds, and systems standards to ensure continued Zoological Association of America (ZAA) accreditation and compliance with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements. The Facilities Manager takes a leadership role in the oversight of facility maintenance, tools, equipment, and improvements to grounds and facilities as it relates to the mission of the Zoo.
The Facilities Manager will serve as the Zoo liaison for outside contractors working on Zoo facilities. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of facilities and project management and resourcefulness in addressing and solving facilities and grounds matters; will be a motivated and organized self-starter; demonstrate a superior work ethic; have the ability to manage time and resources effectively; organize and plan efficiently; work independently and pleasantly with staff and guests; and represent the Zoo in a professional manner. Duties and Responsibilities: Additional duties may be added as needed.
Responsible for the safety and management of Zoo property, grounds, and buildings in a manner that maintains ZAA accreditation and USDA requirements; On-call availability for facility emergencies as needed; Supervises volunteer groups and community service workers; Follows all policies and procedures regarding financial management including procurement and expense reporting; Provides regularly scheduled reports on Zoo facilities and security activities; Maintains tools, equipment and vehicles in good working order and ensures regular maintenance checks; Anticipates and schedule regular maintenance needs through historical knowledge and equipment requirements; Plans ahead for annual and seasonal needs; Serves as organization liaison in the oversight of contractors working on Zoo grounds; Works closely with the Animal Department on habitat construction and renovation, under direction of the Executive Director; Prepares for and oversees inspections of Zoo facilities on a regular basis and as needed; Ensures all Federal, state, and local regulations including, but not limited to OSHA and USDA requirements are met and the Zoo is safe and secure at all times; Attends and participates in staff meetings; Performs all other duties as assigned by Executive Director; Acts in accordance with rules and regulations related to appropriate behavior and safety with animals at the Zoo;
Education and/or experience: Requirements: Must have a high school diploma or GED. Technical training in a trade is strongly preferred. Building, grounds, maintenance, and some construction experience plus three years in a supervisory and/or management capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to manage changing work priorities and weather conditions; read blueprints, schematic diagrams, and technical manuals; develop multi-year, annual, monthly, and weekly maintenance schedules; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; effectively plan, train and supervise work of those engaged in facility maintenance and grounds; follow-up on work assignments and evaluate the work of others; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; independently research problems, keep records and prepare reports; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
Individual must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record and valid VA driver’s license. Candidate must be eligible for employment in the US. Must meet all pre-employment requirements. Preferences: Functional knowledge of Federal, state, and local standards and practice of any or all of the following: OSHA; USDA; first aid; building codes and permits; a wide variety of construction trades including plumbing, electrical, concrete, drywall, carpentry, landscape and painting; supervisory principles and practices; standard safety practices related to tools and equipment; construction management; safety practices; general business etiquette; general customer service techniques; principles of effective supervision; and spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs. Physical Requirements: Able to lift and move 50 lbs. or more safely Able to work in inclement weather Able to spend long periods standing and walking
