BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Provides an educational program that includes the goals and objectives developed by the district, his school, and his colleagues. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOTE: These are not in order of importance) 1.DIAGNOSIS OF CHILDREN •Based upon previous diagnostic information, assesses the needs of children an plans educational programs which meet the identified needs of individual children. •Shows awareness of the primary importance of children’s self concept and emotional well-being. •Recognizes that he shares with the home the responsibility for each child’s success and realizes that a child’s failure may indicate that some variable in the learning situation is inappropriate for the child. 2.PRESCRIPTION FOR CHILDREN •Is continually aware of children’s individual needs and abilities. •Consults with the principal to select the performance objectives for his children that both agree are attainable, given the constraints within which he and the children must operate. •Recognizes that a child’s inattention, misbehavior, and lack of investment in a task are symptomatic behaviors which may be remedied by different learning environments and the child’s recognition of his successes and difficulties. 3.DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN •In designing lessons and instructional materials, plans for a given learning task through as many learning modes as possible (e.g., visual, kinesthetic, auditory, and tactile). •Develops instructional plans related to performance objectives. •Structures the learning environment to enable each child to experience success or, if this seems difficult to achieve, initiates steps with the support of the home to move the child to learning environment more appropriate to his learning style and ability. •Participates in curriculum development programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. •Cooperates with other professionals and parents in assessing and helping children solve health, attitude, and learning problems. •Works to develop an interesting and functional environment for learning. 4.INSTRUCTION OF CHILDREN •Teaches the subjects prescribed by state and local regulatory bodies and other activities found appropriate by his principal and fellow staff members. •Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs and abilities of each child, within the constraints of the school program. •Cooperatively establishes and maintains standards of children’s behavior needed to achieve the functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. 5.ASSESSMENT OF CHILDREN •Determines the method of assessing children’s accomplishment of performance objectives. •Assesses children’s performance in relation to objectives to determine the effectiveness of teaching methods and the degree of children’s learning, then makes appropriate adjustments. •Evaluates children’s academic and social growth on a continuous basis, keeps appropriate adjustments. 6.EVALUATION OF PROGRAMS •Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district and state testing programs, when assigned. •Indicates willingness to work with staff and other appropriate individuals in the evaluation of instructional programs for children. 7.APPRASIAL OF STAFF •Helps to appraise his own performance at regular intervals, based on his children’s progress and the degree to which he fulfills the other duties assigned him utilizing the methods of appraisal already agreed upon. 8.COMMUNICATIONOF INTENT, STATUS, AND RESULTS •Maintains a quality of public relations with the community in which the school is located that exemplifies friendliness, openness, and demonstrates a behavior which fully welcomes and reflects the community’s resources, suggestions, and interests. •Communicates with parents through a variety of means; holds parent conferences in accordance with district policy and when needed to discuss the individuals child’s progress and to interpret programs. •Informs each child of his current status, helping him to recognize his successes and to understand the reasons for and the possible solutions to his school-related difficulties. 9.EXECUTIVE ACTIVITES 10.MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES •Actively participates in the development of school procedures which affect the instructional program and other school activities, when appropriate. •Works with other staff members to develop and implement alternate staffing patterns as needed (e.g., differentiated staffing, team teaching, cooperative teaching, etc.). •Is responsible for the health and welfare of the children within the confines of school property. •Plans and coordinates the work of student teachers, aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals and is responsible for their activities within his/her class area. •Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required. •Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records. •Insures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting, and ventilation to the extent possible. 11.OTHER •Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. •Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees. •Supports the implementation of measures adopted by the State Legislature, the State Board of Education, the District, and the legal requirements as stipulated in the Education Code. •Supports the district philosophy and implements the district goals. •Maintains and improves professional competence through participation in inservice education provided by the district and/or professional growth activities.
