The summary of the maintenance staff position at the Trevor Zoo is a non-exempt position that reports to the Zoo Maintenance Manager. The person in this position is responsible for adhering to the Maintenance Work and Safety Program of the zoo. This includes working with the Maintenance Manager to coordinate and manage the daily operations of the zoo’s physical facilities. The Maintenance staff will carry out most projects independently but will also serve as a mentor to our students & seasonal workers. Responsibilities include:
GROUNDS RESPONSIBILITIES
o Maintain walkways
o Tree trimming and removal within the zoo grounds
o Snow removal with hand shovels, snow-blowers, tractor and plow equipment
o Work on various landscaping projects involving planting, hedge trimming, weeding, vine removal, weed whacking and mowing lawns with a push mower, and identify and remove poison ivy plants and vines
o Maintain and repair damaged fence lines, including otter grates, perimeter fence and animal exhibit fence lines
o Assist in the management of the zoo’s compost areas (carnivore and herbivore)
MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
o Perform basic carpentry tasks (ie: building animal houses/boxes & repairs to wooden structures.
o Service lighting fixtures, attic heating units, sweep and clean roofs, gutters, and exhibit roofs
o Research parts and repairs online for all facilities components in the zoo
o Provide basic support for small water pumps (there are a wide variety of fish tank and waterfall small pumps in operation throughout the zoo)
o Provide basic support for and routine maintenance of engines (lawn mowers, weed whackers, chain saws, power washers, snow blowers, etc.) and power tools (corded and battery operated saws, drills, etc.) and manual tools (shovel, loppers, hand saws)
o Provide basic support for equipment (boilers, well pumps, exhaust fans, refrigeration equipment)
o Provide basic vehicular maintenance such as checking oil, tire pressure, fuel, battery charging.
Other Responsibilities
o Help move/carry 50 pound bags of food/bedding material/hay as needed
o Work in the vicinity and proximity of a variety of species of animals (birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish, spiders, and insects)
o Perform some driving duties such as delivering animals to/from airports
o Instruct and supervise the use of tools among other staff members
o Watering plants as needed
o Plunge toilets, mop floors, and clean exhibit drains
o Other duties as assigned

- Observing heat, air quality (heating/cooling/odor) in buildings, water systems and tool and equipment condition
QUALIFICATIONS
Two year degree and/or technical training required.
Mechanical abilities required.
Knowledge of how to operate and maintain small equipment and power tools.
Two years of grounds and maintenance experience.
Valid and clean driver’s license
Must have strong attention to detail.
Must be able to work as part of a team and possess good communication skills.
