SUMMARY:
The General Earthwork Superintendent position is responsible for overseeing and managing the successful execution of construction projects from start to finish. Core responsibilities include ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, managing project schedules and scopes, coordinating personnel and equipment, and maintaining positive employee relations. The role requires effective communication with field teams, management, and external stakeholders to deliver quality results on time and within budget. This individual must uphold the highest level of decision-making and maintain a positive attitude and good working relationship with customers, employees and public.
Safety Compliance
- Ensure all projects comply with OSHA and MSHA standards, as well as Miller Bros. Construction (MBC) safety programs.
- Enforce proper safety procedures on all field operations.
- Immediately report any major incidents to the Safety Manager and Area Manager.
- Ensure all Safety Incident Reports are submitted within 24 hours of the incident in coordination with the Safety Director.
- Promote daily Site Sense meetings and safety resets with crews, especially before major operations begin.
Project Management
- Review and understand project scopes, schedules, production goals, plans, specifications, and standard drawings.
- Ensure project execution aligns with or exceeds specifications.
- Coordinate all project activities with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen.
- Oversee field personnel and equipment movements to optimize resource use, in collaboration with the Equipment Manager.
- Ensure assigned projects maintain equipment properly and report issues to the Maintenance Supervisor immediately.
- Carry out miscellaneous project-related duties as directed by the Area Manager and/or Vice President.
- Ensure all Superintendents and Foremen submit accurate and timely reports.
Employee Relations
- Communicate and enforce company policies related to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action, Sexual Harassment, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Monitor and ensure compliance with policies at the project level.
- Promptly report employee complaints or policy violations to Human Resources.
- Provide ongoing training for assigned employees across relevant work areas.
- Coordinate manpower requests with local unions.
Leadership
- Direct the work of Superintendents, Foremen, employees, suppliers, and subcontractors across all assigned projects.
- Partner with Project Managers on updated and relevant information to support informed decision-making.
- Assign trucks, equipment, and personnel in coordination with the Equipment Manager to optimize resource utilization.
- Lead and performance manage hourly employees while maintain proper documentation.
- Partner with the Group Manager on performance of leaders and support partners and escalate to achieve the highest level of success.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of field experience in heavy civil construction, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
- Extensive knowledge of dirt work operations including excavation, grading, trenching, and utility installation.
Skills and Competencies:
- Proven leadership and team management capabilities.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and construction best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with field reporting tools, project management software, and scheduling systems (e.g., HCSS or similar).
- Effective communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

- Ability to plan ahead and adjust to dynamic project demands.
Certifications (Preferred or Required):
- OSHA 30-Hour Certification
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- MSHA Certification (if applicable)
- Competent Person certifications in trenching and excavation
Working Conditions:
- Environment: Primarily field-based at active construction sites. Exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind).
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb on and off heavy equipment, lift up to 50 lbs, and navigate uneven terrain.
- Hours: Full-time; may require extended hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends depending on project schedules.
- Travel: Frequent travel between job sites and company offices required.
- PPE: Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (hard hats, high visibility gear, steel-toed boots, etc.).
