JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting with road maintenance and operating necessary machinery.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Rebuilds dirt roads.
- Maintains ditches.
- Clips road shoulders for water drainage.
- Re-builds paved road shoulders.
- Installs pipes, driveways, and cross drains.
- Grades roads for paving projects.
- Trains other employees in equipment operations and safe practices.
- Assists with safety and traffic control.
- Performs maintenance on equipment.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of equipment operation and safety protocol.
- Knowledge of traffic safety.
- Skill in road maintenance.
- Skill in clear communication.
- Skill in training other employees.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Road Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include safety guidelines, state traffic laws, and the Miller County employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied equipment operation duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to maintain roads. Success in this position helps ensure safe roads for travel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, and stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed outside and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and once hired be subject to random drug screens. Miller County is a zero tolerance county.

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
