What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Watch position at Miller Integrated Solutions?
Primary Responsibilities and Key Deliverables
- Monitor fire hazards in the workplace while work is performed by other employees.
- Maintain the conditions and requirements stated on the safety permit.
- Keep flammable materials from ignition sources.
- In the event of fire, extinguish it immediately or turn on a fire alarm.
- Call the plant emergency number.
- Use Stop Work Authority if any hazardous conditions arise.
- Maintain constant means of communication.
- Make sure you and other employees are aware of the exact location of fire fighting equipment in the immediate area.
- Before the start of work each shift, inspect the entire work area and look for potential release of flammable vapors or liquids.
- Be prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors and hose carts anytime.
- Never leave the job site while the work is being done. If you have to leave, stop the job by notifying the Job Lead.
- Monitor the job for 15 to 20 min after the job is complete or longer if the facility rules require a longer time.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Ability to remain alert and monitor surroundings.
- Ability to pass fire watch training courses.
- Understanding of fire triangle.
- Understanding of welding, grinding, confined spaces & hazard recognition.
- Understands the limits of fighting or controlling a fire based on the firefighting equipment. that is supplied to them at the job site.
- Understands when it is required to call for backup.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High School Diploma.
- Experience in an Industrial Environment.
- Pass Fire Watch Training courses required by Miller & customer locations.
- Meets or exceeds the operating requirements of firefighting equipment.
Work Environment
- Tools, equipment, machinery used: Fire hose, water hose, fire extinguisher.
- Working conditions: Will be exposed to all weather conditions. Work on various structures and surfaces both at ground and elevated levels up to and possibly exceeding 150 ft. Work in confined spaces. Work a 12-hour shift with 30-minute lunch breaks. If requested, work overtime, and respond to emergency callouts whenever they occur. Work days, nights, and weekends and or holidays. Travel to customer and other Miller sites as needed.
- Physical effort required: Handling tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 150 lbs. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, crawl, bend, squat, and kneel. Must be capable of climbing towers/vessels/tanks.
