Job Summary/Basic Function
The primary duties include preparation and maintenance of technology laboratories in Osburn Hall (90%) and preparation and maintenance of art studios in Breidenstine Hall (10%), along with assisting with the maintenance and operation of shared instrumentation used by faculty, staff, and students in these programs. These duties include: laboratory safety; developing a team-work oriented undergraduate and graduate laboratory assistant workforce; training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate student laboratory assistants; maintenance of technology and art equipment and processes; troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment and processes; managing hazardous materials storage and removal; administering preventative maintenance and life-cycle renewal programs; and conducting miscellaneous services.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and coordinate predictive and preventative maintenance programs for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and automated equipment.
- Assist with coordinating the operation, maintenance, and repair of shared equipment (e.g., scanning electron microscope) with faculty and staff across campus.
- Facilitate and supervise undergraduate laboratory assistants with preparing supplies and equipment for professor demonstrations, coordinating routine facility organization and management activities, and performing ongoing preventative maintenance tasks.
- Maintain equipment, tools, workstations along with assisting the maintenance of utility systems in Osburn Hall and Breidenstine Hall.
- Some instrumentation may be included in other facilities, on or off campus.
- Assist with facilitating the use of instrumentation by outside groups.
- Ensure that all equipment operates and processes are conducted within safety standards.
- Remove and store hazardous materials until pick up by University contractors under the supervision of University Safety Professionals.
- Assist with storage and disposal of unused equipment and spent supplies according to University policy.
- Identify, diagnose, repair or arrange repairs on malfunctioning technology lab or studio equipment in a timely fashion.
- Isolate any equipment or processes that pose safety concerns and determine the appropriate action to correct the hazard.
- Coordinate with University Maintenance on repairs, including utility and machining of parts.
- Monitor physical condition of systems and facilitate repairs for worn, broken and obsolete materials such as ceiling and floor tiles, exhaust fan belts and lights as needed.
- Facilitate the installation of laboratory and studio furniture, equipment, bulletin boards, chalkboards and picture rails.
- Supervise high pressure gas and chemical usage, return of empty cylinders.
- Evaluate energy consumption of systems and present proposals for sustainability and functionality upgrades to increase building efficiency to save important funds.
- Promote awareness of and document current applicable safety codes and practices for technology laboratories and art studios, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) files and hazardous materials inventory records.
- Survey and assess equipment in two departments to determine life cycle status in collaboration with department chairperson(s), teaching faculty, and laboratory and studio technologies.
- Organize and manage the Central Receiving, Maintenance Repair, and Hazardous Storage spaces in Osburn Hall.
- Update University inventory of equipment in designated departments and locations.
- Research, prepare and submit supply requisitions using the appropriate format by each department.
- Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and test laboratory experiments and demonstrations.
- Salvage and stock surplus components for emergencies and other laboratory and utility needs.
- Develop an awareness of current technology and equipment trends for technology labs and art studios.
- Utilize appropriate office and laboratory computer software.
- Provide miscellaneous services such as shipping, receiving and outsourcing.
- Serve as a source of information regarding the overall facility.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in mechanically related technologies.
- Two years of progressively complex maintenance experience.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment failure.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize duties.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to follow detailed procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to plan and organize routine equipment & building maintenance.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Successful interview.
- Successful completion of three background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced level of machine tool experiences.
- Two years prior experience working as a maintenance mechanic.
Essential Functions
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- Moderate physical effort.
- Exposure to physical and chemical risks requiring attention to safe behavior and material handling.
- There may be work with and safe handling of pressurized gases (e.g., argon, carbon dioxide), electrical equipment organic solvents and other chemicals.
- Ability to sit for long lengths of time.
- Must be able to lift/pull/push up to 50 pounds.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
