POSITION TITLE
PhD Intern – Chemical Synthesis, Performance Colorants & Ingredients
POSITION OVERVIEW
This internship supports the chemical synthesis team within the Performance Colorants and Ingredients business for a duration of six months. The candidate will join a multi-functional team, with responsibility for synthesizing a set of target color molecules in furtherance of Milliken’s sustainability goals. This position requires strong skill in planning and executing organic reactions as well as clearly communicating the results to a variety of stakeholders. This position is located at Milliken & Company’s corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, SC and reports to the Group Leader for PCI Synthesis.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and execute multi-step chemical synthesis routes to access assigned targets
Characterize intermediates, size products, and final products using a variety of characterization techniques
Keep detailed notes of experiments and observations
Report results to the project team and key stakeholders through regular project meetings
Capture all learnings in a final report to the team
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
- Currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in synthetic organic chemistry (3rd year or later preferred)
- Strong history as an experimentalist using scientific method
- Experience planning and executing multi-step organic synthesis experiments
- Familiarity with common characterization techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, UPLC, and IR spectroscopy.
- History of collaborative spirit, leadership, critical thinking, and organizational skills
- Strong commitment to safety
- This position requires candidates to be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship for a work visa (e.g., H-1B, TN, etc.)
