Responsible for managing and maintaining the school district’s network infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity, security, and performance across all buildings. This role involves configuring and administering network hardware, file servers, software, UPS systems, printers, wireless networks, and VoIP telephony systems. The Network Administrator designs and implements network storage, backup solutions, and redundancy strategies while maintaining comprehensive documentation of the network topology and inventory.
Security is a key focus, requiring continuous assessment of network vulnerabilities, enforcement of security protocols in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations, and proactive management of firewalls and intrusion detection systems. The Network Administrator also provides technical support to staff and students, troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues within the wired and wireless network environments.
Additionally, this position collaborates with vendors to evaluate and procure networking solutions, contributes to technology planning and budgeting, and assists district committees with technology-related projects. Training staff on network use and ensuring continuity of network services during equipment failures is also a key responsibility. The role may require occasional evening and weekend work to support system maintenance and upgrades. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the district’s technology needs.
1. Network Infrastructure Management
- Configure, administer and maintain the district’s network, including all network hardware, file servers, software, UPS, printers, wireless systems, and Internet connections for the district’s buildings.
- Assist in the design of network technologies related to storage, backup, data warehousing, and redundancy.
- Install, configure, and maintain all aspects of a converged VoIP telephony system including server based call managers, voicemail systems, and 911 services. Performs Moves, Adds, and Changes to VoIP and analog telephony devices as needed.
- Maintain an inventory of networking equipment, thoroughly document the network topology, and maintain a change log for the network.
2. Network Security
- Assess network security and performance on an ongoing basis and make adaptations as needed to ensure a secure network environment for the district.
- Implement and enforce network security protocols to protect sensitive data and comply with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policies.
- Monitor and respond to security threats and vulnerabilities, including managing firewalls and intrusion detection systems.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations regarding data privacy and security.
3. Technical Support and Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support to staff and students on issues and problems relating to the networked environment in which they work.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and suggest solutions for hardware and software problems, issues, and conflicts within the wired and wireless networks.
- Assume responsibility for day-to-day network administration issues for students and staff.
4.Vendor and Project Management
- Communicate with vendors to assist in the evaluation and selection of networking hardware and software solutions for the school district.
- Provide technology input and possible solutions to various district committees and projects as appropriate.
- Assist the Director of Digital Learning and Innovative Educational Technology in preparing the network portion of the technology department’s capital and operations budgets.
5. Planning and Training
- Assist in the development, implementation, and review of a plan to mitigate the educational impact of network equipment failures.
- Assist in the development and implementation of network use training programs for administrative, instructional and support staff.
6. General/Other
- Perform maintenance, support, and other responsibilities during evenings and weekends as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
