Closing Date: March 13th, 2025    Deputy Sheriff Lateral / Pre-Certified Full-time Hourly Range: $33.78 – $43.31   Milwaukee County Office of the Sheriff (MCSO) is seeking Deputy Sheriff applicants that possess one of the following: Completion of Wisconsin Department of Justice “Law Enforcement Recruit” training course and are eligible for certification upon employment. Currently certified by the Law Enforcement Standards Board as a Law Enforcement Officer. Currently enrolled in a Law Enforcement Recruit School expected to graduate within 60 days of posting date.   If you are applying as a Lateral (employed at another law enforcement agency and seeking to transfer), you will receive wage and vacation consideration. Any Deputy Sheriff candidate who is eligible to gain or regain employment as a certified law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin LESB prior to being hired by MCSO will be offered wages at the time of hire that is commensurate to the candidate’s experience and shall advance through the vacation allocation schedule accordingly. *** Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ): Applicants will receive the release form, Personal History Questionnaire, and required documents paperwork 1-2 weeks after the job posting closes. If you are a lateral applicant from out of state you must have taken the reciprocity exam, passed the exam, and have your approval letter to turn in upon application. Please make sure to additionally check your spam/junk email folders as sometimes unrecognized emails will filter to those folders automatically. ***    Job Summary: Under general supervision, perform a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, limb, and property.  Including law enforcement and crime prevention work; inherent in this work is the investigation of crime and forceful apprehension of criminal suspects. ​ Job Duties Under General supervision, perform a variety of law enforcement duties. To patrol Milwaukee County roads in car or on foot. To make arrests as necessary: To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work by patrolling in car and on foot assigned area including traffic, parking, crowd control, answering calls for service and investigating crimes. To interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; to interrogate suspects; to gather and preserve evidence. To keep records, prepare reports and testify in court. To prepare reports of arrests made, investigations conducted, and incidents observed. To apply force, up to and including deadly force, to effect arrests and maintain order. To maintain custody of county charges and prisoners during examinations, hearings, hospital intensive security directed missions, trials, or during conveyance to State or County institutions. To work in the county court system as a bailiff and to always preserve peace and order in the court. To attend in-service training as mandated by the State of Wisconsin or as directed. To perform duties in a special assignment capacity as assigned; to work within a strict, chain of command military-style structure. To serve warrants, subpoenas, and civil documents. To participate in specialized units. To provide emergency medical care as required as a Law Enforcement First Responder. Facilitate booking, identification, release, classification and monitoring of occupants at Milwaukee County Jail. Perform this process properly, maintain a safe and secure facility. Assist courts, attorneys, & prisons. Ensure occupants rights from the time of booking until release and to ensure safety and security of the occupants, the staff and the community. Other duties as assigned. ​ Equipment, Tools, and Materials During the completion of job duties, the following are equipment, tools, and materials utilized: motor vehicle, police radio, First Aid, AED equipment, personal computer, firearms, and handcuffs. ​ Working Conditions Physical Demands: Continuous utilization of fine dexterity function, manual dexterity function, and upper extremity repetitive motion function.  Frequent standing, walking, running, sitting, reaching, climbing, driving, bending, kneeling, lifting and/or carrying 100 lbs. or more, and pushing and/or pulling 200 lbs. or more. Must meet hearing and vision standards. Occasional typing necessary. ​ Non-Physical Demands: Continuous analysis and reasoning, communication and interpretation, math and mental computation, reading, sustained mental activity including but not limited to auditing, problem solving, composing reports, etc.  Frequent writing necessary.   Environmental Demands:  Very frequent task changes, tedious and exacting work, public contact, physical danger, toxic substances.  Frequent contact with dust, temperature extremes, and loud noises.   Note: Candidates should expect to be assigned to all shifts, holidays and weekends and/or to work mandatory overtime. Candidates must successfully complete the Deputy Sheriff Training Program. This position is subject to a probationary period of 2600 hours of straight time hours paid, excluding overtime. ​ This position requires qualifying with a service weapon on a regular basis and successful completion of Law Enforcement Training Courses. Individuals offered employment must pass a pre-employment drug test andmedical examination as a condition of employment. ​ Demands/Deadlines:  High volume and variable work demands, and deadlines impose strain on a routine basis or considerable stress intermittently.  Regular direct contacts with distressed individuals within the immediate work environment. Exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.  Work requires frequent, substantive contacts with people in highly stressful situations. Delicacy and unpredictability of contacts routinely creates considerable strain or heavy stress regularly. ​ Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Skill in reading and comprehending written material; oral and written communication skills; ability to gain the respect and control the behavior of offenders; ability to take prompt and decisive action in emergency situations; ability to restrain combative subjects; ability to maintain a positive attitude and emotional control; ability work with computers; ability to follow work procedures and rules; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others. ​ Preferred Education Associate degree or higher in an interdisciplinary field that incorporates the study of law, psychology, sociology, public administration, police sciences, criminal justice, or business; Any Postgraduate level degree, regardless of discipline; Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) certification or completion of Law Enforcement 720-hour Academy.    Minimum Qualifications Minimum age of 20 United States Citizenship at time of appointment Current LESB Certification, eligibility to re-gain certification, or graduation from a law enforcement academy within 60 days of posting date. High School Diploma or equivalency Valid Driver’s License at time of application and maintained throughout employment. (Must obtain Valid WI Driver’s License within 60 days after establishing residency). Driver’s License must be recognized by the WI DOT as authorizing operation of a Motor Vehicle in WI. Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets Possession of an associate degree or higher from an accredited college/university OR must attain a minimum of sixty (60) college level credits from an accredited college/university within five (5) years of initial law enforcement employment Physically able to perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff Successful completion of the Office of the Sheriff Background Investigation   Note: This Original Examination is open to all qualified applicants authorized to work in the United States. The incumbent must establish residency in Wisconsin within six (6) months of appointment and maintain such residency throughout their incumbency. In accordance with Rule III section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education, and related experience. APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF FILING APPLICATION Note: The 60-college credit 5-year timeframe begins from your initial law enforcement employment date of hire, which includes any previous/prior law enforcement employment.  Upon completion of a required background check, all eligible candidates will be required to submit an official transcript documenting the completion of any current college credits, degrees, and/or completion of law enforcement certification as stipulated in the “minimum qualifications” section of this posting. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility for the Deputy Sheriff position.  Educational institutions often require more than two business weeks to process official transcript requests.  It is strongly recommended applicants submit these requests to the granting institution shortly following the submission of an application for the Deputy Sheriff position.    PG17BZ PB
