Job Summary
The Golf Course Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent. Under the Superintendent’s supervision, the assistant directs and delegates the maintenance of the golf course grounds including the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers and clubhouse grounds. The assistant also helps supervise and perform maintenance of the mowing equipment and other mechanical units.
Job Responsibilities
Crew Supervision - Assist in personnel management and evaluation by dispersing daily crew work assignments. Ensure proper safety and discipline as needed. Coordinate crew scheduling and make adjustments based on the weather and golf events. Manages/supervises full-time seasonal staff. Act as the golf course superintendent in the absence of the Superintendent.
Maintenance of the Golf Course and Clubhouse Grounds - Oversee and perform the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and natural areas on the facility grounds including mowing, trimming, edging and mulching. Assist with park operations during the winter months which includes plowing, snow removal, flipping/showing rental halls, grooming cross country ski trails, cleaning facilities, maintaining equipment, and performing minor equipment repairs.
Equipment Maintenance - Supervise and perform the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment. Haul equipment to service department if "in house" resources have been exhausted.
Chemical and Fertilizer Applications - Supervise and participate in the application of chemicals and fertilizers on the golf course grounds in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations. Calibrate sprayers and spreaders based on application rates required by pesticide labels.
Scouting and Monitoring - Perform daily scouting of disease and insect pressure to help determine pesticide application needs. Keep logs of environmental conditions and indicator areas to better plan for chemical control timing.
Irrigation Maintenance - Observe moisture levels throughout the golf course on a daily basis to determine irrigation needs. Periodically check through sprinklers to ensure proper function and expose and fix sprinkler or piping issues when they arise. Update and adjust irrigation computer accordingly.
Record Keeping - Supply accurate records of fuel usage, water usage, daily work assignments, inventories and other various logs as directed by the Superintendent.
Project Management - Supervise and manage projects as delegated by the Superintendent. Determine supplies needed and number of staff needed to fulfill project completion.
Use of Equipment, Tools and Machinery – Operate triplex mowers, rotaries, fairway mowers, sand pros, loaders, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, saws, various hand tools, and computers.
Ability to push, pull, lift and carry 50 lbs.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, License/Certification and Experiences
Current residency within the State of Wisconsin upon application required
Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required and must be maintained throughout incumbency
High School diploma or GED required
At least six (6) months or more work experience in Grounds, Landscaping, Park Maintenance or Golf Course Management required
WI DATCP Category 3.0 (Turf & Landscape) Pesticide Applicator certification required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire
Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire
First Aid certification required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
CPR certification required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire
Preferred Education, License/Certification and Experiences
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred
Previous work experience in a Lead, Supervisory or Management role preferred
Associate/Bachelor’s degree or certificate in Turf Management preferred
