Job Summary: Under general supervision, to perform a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, limb and property, including law enforcement and crime prevention work; inherent in this work is the investigation of crime and forceful apprehension of criminal suspects.
This hourly position will typically be scheduled to work 40 hours in a pay period (two-week timeframe). This is a non-represented, classified position.
Job Duties:
To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work by patrolling assigned court area including traffic, parking, crowd control, answering calls for service and investigating crimes; to make arrests as necessary.
To always preserve peace and order in the courtroom. This duty includes jury management and the escort of jury panels to and from courtrooms.
To prepare reports of arrests made, investigations conducted, and incidents observed.
To maintain custody of prisoners during examinations, hearings, hospital transports, trials or during conveyance to other State or County institutions.
To participate in in-service training as required by the LESB and other developmental training as required by the Service area.
To interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence; to testify and present evidence in court; to apply force, up to and including deadly force. To effect arrests and maintain order.
To provide medical care as required as a Law Enforcement First Responder.
Other duties may be required by superior officers.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials:
During the completion of job duties, the following are equipment, tools, and materials utilized: motor vehicle, police radio, First Aid, AED equipment, personal computers, weapons & Specialized Law enforcement equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum age of 21
Current residency in the State of Wisconsin.
Basic Knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
High School Diploma or Wisconsin GED that meets Wisconsin GED standards.
Valid Driver’s License at time of application and maintained throughout employment.
At least five (5) years of Wisconsin Law Enforcement experience.
Must have successfully completed the WI Law Enforcement Standards Board certification (LESB) preparatory training for law enforcement officers AND be within the designated timeframe to regain employment as a LESB certified law enforcement officer and must maintain throughout employment.
Possession of an associate degree or higher from an accredited college/university OR must possess a minimum of sixty (60) college level credits from an accredited college/university at the time of hire.
Successful completion of the Office of the Sheriff Background Investigation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Skill in reading and comprehending written material; oral and written communication skills; ability to gain the respect and control the behavior of offenders; ability to take prompt and decisive action in emergency situations; ability to restrain combative subjects; ability to maintain a positive attitude and emotional control; ability work with computers; ability to follow work procedures and rules; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others. Ability to lift and carry up to 100 and push and pull up to 200 pounds.
Hearing criteria: Required hearing should be at 25 dB or less in each ear at the following frequencies: 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz with or without hearing aids. Hearing aids test should consist of one ear at a time with the other ear masked.
Vision criteria: corrected distant vision no less than 20/40 in each eye, uncorrected distant vision 20/100 or better in both eyes. For near vision no less than 20/40 in better eye.
