Job Summary
This position will assist in providing a safe swim environment by supervising patrons in or around the water. This position will also utilize effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and prevent drownings, accidents, and injuries from occurring and also respond to emergencies. This position will also effectively communicate and enforce policies, safety procedures and minimize hazards as well as assist in program implementation and teach swim lessons and water exercise classes.
Job Responsibilities
Lifeguarding – Supervise activities and actively guard and scan the swim area and perimeter to prevent drownings and injuries from occurring. Enforce policies and recognize and respond to rescues and emergency situations. Administer first aid and emergency medical care. Maintain goof mental and physical fitness.
Training/Maintaining Certifications - Continuous training in lifesaving skills, emergency medical and CPR skills. Participate in emergency procedure testing, in-service training and testing, physical fitness activities, orientations, and other staff meetings and trainings as requested.
Customer Service and Effective communication - Work in a team dynamic and effectively communicate with coworkers. Provide a welcoming environment and effectively communicate with all patrons. Enforce all pool and beach policies and rules in a personable and professional manner.
Maintain Facilities and Equipment - Inspect, clean and maintain pool and beach facilities, and rescue equipment. Inspects pools to ensure they are safe and usable for the staff and public. Assist with maintaining proper water chemistry including filter washes, adding chemicals and monitoring feeders.
Administrative Duties - Complete paperwork such as first aid, rescue, emergency, incident and accident reports. Record water tests and pool operation information.
Program Implementation - Teach water exercise, instruct lessons, and assist in lifeguard trainings.
Properly and safely operate: chemical controllers, pool filter systems, pool vacuums, pressure washers, water test kits, hand tools, shovels and snow blowers.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Licenses/Certifications and Experience
Must be at least 16 years of age at time of employment
Emergency Medical Responder Certification required during employment
Milwaukee County Lifeguard Certification required during employment
AHA-BLS CPR & AED Certification required during employment.
Must pass all in service testing
Strong swimming proficiency and comfortable being in all types of water conditions
Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety
Maintain professional image, meet grooming and uniform requirements, maintain good mental and physical health
Work Schedule: Must be flexible to workdays, evenings, nights, overtime, weekends, shift rotations, and holidays as required.
Ability to push, pull, carry and lift up to 50 lbs.
Candidates will be evaluated and graded through the Physical Performance examination, which will consist of the following skills taught in the In-water training class. Sign up HERE for the In-water training class.
100 Meter swim - freestyle, completed in less than 1 minute, 45 seconds.
Surface dive and retrieval of a submerged object.
Front approach cross-chest carry.
Rear approach cross-chest carry.
Front approach head-hold and release to a cross-chest carry.
Rear approach head-hold and release to a cross-chest carry.
Double wrist grip and release to a cross-chest carry.
Note: This Original Examination is open to all qualified applicants authorized to work in the United States. In accordance with Rule III section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
