Hourly Pay Range: $10.36 – $17.82
Job Summary: The Seasonal Grounds Zoo Worker will assist in the general upkeep of operations of the Zoological Gardens and perform assigned duties to ensure a pleasurable, safe experience for all zoo visitors.
Essential Responsibilities
Park clean up - Under general supervision: remove waste and recyclables, clean and pick paper, leaf blow and pick up leaves, remove snow and treat ice, and pick up and deliver animal food, browse, tables, chairs, and other items.
Landscaping - Operate riding and push mowers, weed whips, and tillers. Aerate, plant, water, prune, weed, and remove evasive plants. Top dress, seed, and perform other landscape functions.
Lead and Drive – Operate electric and /or gas driven carts and light duty trucks if possessing a valid Class D driver’s license (could include plowing snow and going off zoo grounds to pick up trees for browse or items for the zoo). Lead a small crew of Zoo Workers to work under minimal supervision.
Repair and operate - Perform routine maintenance to buildings, fencing, pavement, and equipment. Paint buildings and fences and operate a pressure washer. Operate equipment such as forklifts and skid loaders if possessing a valid Class D driver’s license.
Other - Provide information and direction to Zoo Visitors. Aid other staff and Zoo Visitors. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
16 years of age or older (Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid Class D driver’s license to operate riding and landscape equipment).
Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
Able to lift/carry up to 50lbs and push/pull up to 75lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
Valid United States Driver’s License (Class D).
Valid Class B Driver’s License.
Valid Class A CDL.
Forklift and Skid Steer trained and certified.
NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
