Youth Correctional Officer
Department of Health & Human Services
Hourly Range: $30.00 - $33.69
Job Summary: Under general supervision, to perform a variety of Youth Correctional Officer duties; to provide direct supervision of youths held in secure detention at the Vel R. Phillips Youth & Family Justice Center; to maintain compliance with Wisconsin Administrative Code 346, Federal Statutes and National Standards; to provide safety and security of the building, staff, detainees, outside visitors and organizations are first and foremost. Housing the youths in a secure environment is primary, with an established schedule and policies in place to guide the staff. This position exists to handle a need for secure detention for Milwaukee County youths that are pending court hearings or post disposition placement.
Job Responsibilities
- Maintain order and rules on the pod, interacting with youths follow programming and the daily pod schedule. Keep an accurate count at all times of each youth is on or off the pod.
- Custodial search each youth upon entering our facility. Process the youth into the ProPhoenix Booking System on the computer, updating any new information. Proper screening and processing of each youth. Escort each to their assigned pod.
- The support positions are ready and available to assist in any incident that occurs, assists in all detention center movement. These positions interact with the general public, attorneys, and law enforcement.
- Documenting by entering data, personal information, behavior, movements, and visits into the computer.Help provide guidance and counseling to youths, while they are in detention.
- Supervise the general cleaning of the pods and cells.
- Properly search the youths and the entire detention center.
- Provide general security for the youths, staff, teachers, and medical staff.
- Each YCO must attend and pass mandatory re-certification training. -24hrs per year (minimum).
- Must be able to demonstrate and safely do all techniques outlined in the State of Wisconsin Principle of Subject Control manual.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Experiences, Licenses/Certifications and Education
- Graduation from high school, high school equivalency diploma or GED required.
- Certification by the Law Enforcement Standards Board must be acquired during the probationary period and maintained during incumbency.
- Minimum age of 21.
- Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver's license is required at time of application and maintained during incumbency. Driving record will be reviewed at time of appointment.
- Applicants shall be of good moral character determined from results of fingerprinting and background investigation.
- Felons, unless pardoned, will be rejected.
Preferred Areas: College level course work in law enforcement, criminal justice, psychology, child psychology, sociology, education, or social work preferred. Social work experience is preferred. Experience working at Children's Court is preferred. Experience teaching children is preferred. Experience working with children aged 19 and below is preferred.
Physical Abilities and Demands: Standing, Walking, Running, Sitting, Bending/Kneeling, Typing, Hearing, and Reaching. Lifting/carrying 20-40lbs. Pushing/Pulling 20-40lbs. Physical Danger.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in reading and comprehending written material; oral and written communication skills; ability to gain the respect and control the behavior of offenders; ability to take prompt and decisive action in emergency situations; ability to restrain combative inmates; ability to maintain a positive attitude and emotional control; ability to work with computers; ability to follow work procedures and rules; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others. Ability to write reports.
