Job Summary
The Department of Career-Readiness is looking for a Planning Assistant Worked-Based Learning Specialist; this position is full time and will support multiple high schools throughout the district.
The purpose of this position is to increase the number of high school students participating in paid internships and youth apprenticeships with local employers. The person hired will work collaboratively with the high school staff and students, and the central services Career and Technical Education (CTE) office, School-to-Work, and Contract Compliance to achieve this purpose. The CTE office has an established, district-wide, work-based learning program. This position will support the centrally managed work-based learning program at the local high school level, and report to the manager of CTE.

Position Requirements:
- Technical Diploma or Associate Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (Counseling, Education, Human Resources, Human Services, etc.) OR at least 3 years of related job experience. Equivalent combinations of training, education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with students on career readiness in a school or community program.
- Working knowledge of career readiness preparation and access.
Preferred Requirements:
- Bachelor¿s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (Counseling, Education, Human Resources, Human Services, etc.).
- At least 2 years of experience working with businesses/organizations to provide student employment opportunities.
Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the CTE office, coordinate the planning, operation, and advancement of the local high school work-based learning program for all eligible students in grades 11 and 12, giving qualifying students the opportunity to participate in youth apprenticeships and internships in various career areas for academic credit.
- Coordinate and provide career awareness and career-readiness presentations, workshops, and/or events, for small and large groups of students and/or families. Presentations and workshops may include local employer involvement, and could include, but are not limited to: mock or real interview sessions; resume workshops; round-table discussions with employer/community partners; student and/or parent information sessions; events for students to network with professionals, local employer guest speakers on particular career pathways; etc. All students in grades 9-12 may participate in these activities.
- Arrange for, and assist students with, preparation for all aspects of the employment process. This includes, but is not limited to, job searches, job applications, resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, student communication with employers or prospective employers, scheduling, conflict resolution, transportation issues, and general employment counseling.
- Communicate regularly with local high school students eligible for youth apprenticeships and internships.
- Coordinate and schedule work-based learning related trips to local employers or other organizations that provide opportunities for career awareness or work-readiness. Arrange and schedule bus transportation for said trips.
- Work with CTE teachers, as well as members of advisory boards, for assistance in preparing students for employment.
- Make required periodic visits to the places of student employment, evaluate employers and worksites for safety and educational suitability.
- Communicate regularly with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) office¿s work-based learning staff, who coordinate youth apprenticeships and internships for the district.
- Disseminate CTE office communications to staff and students.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the CTE office on the annual district job fairs; attend regular meetings, as needed; disseminate information about the fairs to staff and students and recruit students and employers for participation.
- Work in conjunction with appropriate CTE staff during the student job application process, including internship and youth apprenticeship agreements, and maintaining appropriate student and employer files.
- Develop relationships with existing local employers and maintain ongoing communication with employer partners and prospective employers who may participate in the work-based learning program.
- Communicate and coordinate regularly with local high school staff, including the principal, assistant principals, college and career center planning assistants, school-to-work staff, teachers, and counselors, as appropriate.
- Communicate with parents and caregivers on an ongoing basis to support students throughout the employment process.
- Communicate regularly with local employer partners to check-in on student performance, report to CTE office, and collaboratively determine whether interventions are required.
- Collaborate with the CTE office and Employ Milwaukee with regard to employment opportunities and programs for students such as job fairs, summer youth employment, etc. Attend meetings and events, as appropriate.
- Schedule taxi rides for students who require taxi transportation to or from their worksites or prospective worksites.
- Review students¿ report cards, attendance and discipline at least each quarter to determine continued eligibility; monitor students in danger of failing.
- Work closely with counselors and CTE teachers to recommend and place identified students in their career fields upon graduation; form partnerships with potential employers throughout the region to assist graduates with job placement.
- Accept any additional responsibilities not inconsistent with the position.
