JOB TITLE: Youth Head Swim Coach
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time seasonal
STARTING HOURLY RATE: $19.00
HOURS PER WEEK: 9 - 16
JOB SUMMARY:
Head Swim Coaches are responsible for providing a safe and friendly competitive swim experience for age-group swimmers of all ability levels. Coaches are expected to always maintain a positive and responsible demeanor, and challenge swimmers to reach new goals in the water. The head swim coach will coordinate with assistant swim coaches to promote a sense of teamwork and sportsmanship in efforts applied to competition during both wins and losses.
POSITION SUMMARY:
- Teach stroke techniques for all 4 individual swimming events, including starts, turns, and finishes.
- Use appropriate student language to accommodate a wide array of ages, backgrounds and ability levels.
- Ability to communicate professionally with parents and co-workers.
- Assign reasonable workouts to your swimmers that align with ability levels and promote teamwork.
- Share patron concerns and needs with supervisor or building staff when necessary.
- Maintain a professional appearance by always being in uniform and keeping the facility clean and organized.
- Coordinate volunteers, assistant coaches, and athletes during host swim meets.
- Uphold all MPS and Milwaukee Recreation policies while at away meets.
- Communicate swim meets and events to athletes and their families via a meet calendar.
- Build relationships with swimmers and families.
- Be punctual. Alert building staff if you anticipate being tardy.
- Report to all assigned shifts and be proactive in finding replacements when needed.
- Be an authority figure at your facility and work to create a safe and fun environment for others.
- Be prepared for each practice and swim meet you run during a scheduled session.
- Enforce all pool rules in a consistent and fair manner.
- Maintain current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold current American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification or Lifeguard certification.
- Certification in CPR/AED recommended.
- Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position
- Access to reliable transportation
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Swim team experience and several years of coaching experience.
- Experience leading youth through group interval training.
- Experience coordinating and hosting youth swim meets.
- Experience providing high quality interval training for advanced competitive swim athletes.
- Previous or current experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor.
- Experience using meet technology; Colorado Timing System.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Possess swimming ability that may be used for demonstration to your students.
- Ability to communicate well with patrons and co-workers.
- Ability to work with a wide range of athletes based on age and ability.
- Possess knowledge relating to head injury and concussion prevention.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during emergency situations.
- Maintain professionalism while on duty.
