Founded in 2000, the Milwaukee Academy of Science is a K4-12th grade independent charter school serving nearly one thousand scholars in downtown Milwaukee. The mission of MAS is to graduate students prepared to compete successfully at the post-secondary level. African American students comprise 99% of the student body and over 95% of students qualify for free or reduced meals. Regardless of student background and external factors, MAS maintains the expectation that students should be on grade level and proficient on state assessments. Teachers are expected to plan and prepare rigorous lessons as well as communicate and collaborate with staff and parents.
MAS is seeking a Special Education Teacher. This position will work with grades 9-12. Candidates must be certified by DPI and preferably have urban education teaching experience.
I. Accountability Objectives :
The teacher is responsible for providing support to general educators, modifications, and direct instruction to the district’s special education students. The teacher is expected to provide adopted educational programming as prescribed in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). This entails execution of the district’s instructional programs and IEPs that are developed to meet the needs of the individual students. Teachers are expected to perform these tasks as directed by their immediate supervisor. It is expected that work direction will be provided for by the supervisor and teacher’s performance will comply with Board policies, contractual obligations, administrative rules and regulations, and all procedures and practices.
II. Position Characteristics :
Length of Contract : First-Year Teachers- 197 days; Returning Teachers- 195 days
III. Position Relationships :
Reports to : Director of Special Education
Coordinates with : Building Principal, Special Education Director, teachers, central officer personnel, other school staff, program support teachers, parents / families
Type of Coordination : Curricular, program, assessment, conferences, IEPs and activities related to writing IEPs and reports. Assist in the compilation of data providing program accountability and effectiveness.
IV. Position Qualifications :
Required Qualifications : Wisconsin Teaching Certification in Special Education
V. Position Responsibilities :
A. Understand the educational philosophy of the School and for carrying out the policies of the Board of Directors
B. Consult and corresponds with parents, staff and administration i.e. phone, email,
written, etc
C. Participate in parent conferences and IEP meetings when necessary
D. Direct and evaluates the learning experience of the student in classroom and assigned co-curricular activities
E. Provide guidance which will promote the welfare and educational development of the student
F. Use effective teaching techniques that will foster optimal student learning
G. Plan and deliver instruction based on the curriculum adopted by the School and needs of the individual student including modifications, adaptations, etc
H. Plan a variety of instructional activities to meet the individual needs, interests, and
abilities of students, preferably in inclusionary settings
I. Establish and maintains an inclusionary / resource classroom environment that is orderly and conducive to optimal learning
J. Participate as an evaluator in the special education referral and assessment process when called upon
K. Insure that students with disabilities are assisted in the necessary remediation of
health, attitude, and learning concerns by providing appropriate instruction and working cooperatively with general classroom staff.
L. Maintain a positive relationship with students, staff, and parents that will promote
effective communication
