Job Description
Job Functions: Maintains multiple animal holding rooms and support areas to include sanitizing and cleaning and stocking of supplies. Monitors daily health and environment in animal rooms. Records health information of animals and provides an accurate written record of daily animal room activity. Performs cage changes to include water, bedding, and food. Responsible for cleaning common areas. Performs cage sanitizing and cleaning. Communicates with various staff to assist with the treatment of sick or injured animals as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Must have effective communication skills and good attention to detail. Must have ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently as well as with others, display industriousness, conscientiousness and dependability. The ability to be flexible and adjust to changing conditions/requirements is essential. Associates degree, Veterinary Technician or higher in a related field, or one (1) year of animal care experience in an animal lab environment, veterinarian clinic, or other related experience preferred; certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification is a plus. Also a plus- husbandry.
Regularly required to move about the animal lab facility; frequently lifts up to 50 pounds; pushes/pulls/and/or moves up to 500 pounds with assistance of a cart; occasionally required to climb or stoop and requires good vision. Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions. The noise level is usually moderate. Animal care is a 7 day per week, 365 days per year job and all tasks must be performed to fulfill guidelines according to the regulations. This job involves weekend and holiday rotations. Reliable and consistent attendance is required.
