Job Summary
This role encompasses multiple functions related to patient accounts and financial counselling. This position requires fundamental knowledge of the MMH Collection Policy, as well as the different options available to patients for financial assistance.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Greet all patients, families and hospital visitors with a positive, cheerful attitude.
- Review daily IP, ER, Surgery and OP admissions that are Private Pay.
- Responsible for financially clearing patients at ER, hospital bedside or OP registration to obtain cash payment or determine eligibility for various governmental programs.
- Visit uninsured patients in-house.
- Conduct interviews with patients and / or family members.
- Record and maintain complete documentation of activities performed on account while in-house.
- Calculate and collect cash payments appropriately for all patients.
- Set up arrangements / monthly installment plans for patients to payoff balances within the guidelines of MMH collection policy. Follow up on any payments that were part of a payment plan.
- Discuss outstanding balances with patients attempting to receive future services. Provide an estimate for the future service and create a payment plan to resolve older debt.
- Explore all payment options for self-pay patients and patient balances with large after insurance copayments.
- As needed, assistance with housing, crime victims, and custody issues.
- Provide good faith estimates to patients on upcoming or potential medical services.
- Screens patients to make the determination of eligibility for internal and external assistant programs.
- Assist in registering patients or admitting patients when needed.

- Maintain complete records of all patients applying for indigent or financial assistance to include the application, proof of income, the acceptance / denial letter, and any other applicable documentation.
- Be willing to serve as a communications person between the department and hospital.
- Performs initial triage for all self-pay patients requesting assistance.
- Be knowledgeable on all MMH services, including all MMH clinics.
- Provides guidance on financial issues for patients.
- Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Answer questions, resolve problems, and assist patients with repayment terms.
- Responsible for contacting patients who are delinquent in payment by mail, email, and / or telephone.
- Work as mediators to research hardship discount options as well as create payment plans that are acceptable to hospital policy.
- Will consider a patient's income, other financial obligations, and debt load during the application process.
- Oversee the payments to ensure patients pay on time and follow through with their new, often reduced, financial commitments.
- Submit the delinquencies to collection agencies.
- Ensures compliance with hospital credit policies and able to explain the requirements in verbal and written form.
- Submits claim corrections as needed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs point of service collection with patient payments
- Performs patient calls to establish one of two payment plans- External bank with interest and internal short-term option or payment directly from the patient.
- Performs switchboard functions
- Greets all patients, families and visitors with a cheerful, positive attitude
- Sends initial patient balance due / yellow letter and the itemized statement
- Sends past due letter / pink letter when balances are due at 90 days
